“For people with debilitating long Covid, the new year heralds a cruel anniversary: Some are experiencing their fifth year with the agonizing illness. And despite the roughly $1.6 billion that the National Institutes of Health has received for long Covid research, not a single drug has yet been approved for that purpose.”

Sluggish gas exchange in the lungs may be involved in long-COVID brain fog | CIDRAP

“Lower rates of gas exchange in the lungs may contribute to impaired cognitive function ("brain fog") tied to long COVID, according to a small study to be presented at next week's Radiological Society of North America's (RSNA's) annual meeting in Chicago.

Pulmonary gas exchange is the movement of oxygen from the lungs to the bloodstream and carbon dioxide from the bloodstream to the lungs.”

Recovery and long-term health outcomes of SARS-CoV-2 infection in a prospective cohort in an urban setting, Kenya
Recovery and long-term health outcomes of SARS-CoV-2 infection in a prospective cohort in an urban setting, Kenya
“Conclusions: Six months post-infection, half of participants had lingering symptoms, with a third still affected after a year. Recovery was faster in younger, more educated individuals, while severe Long COVID was more common in women and those with low education and pre-existing conditions. Findings highlight the burden of Long COVID in Kenya and the need for support for vulnerable groups.”

Why I'm Not Panicking
Why I'm Not Panicking
“The path to curing Long COVID is a long and imperfect one. We’re in this for a while, and the ride will be bumpy. It feels particularly bumpy right now. Waiting for a definitive cure, and using trial-and-error methods in the meantime, requires emotional fortitude itself. Adding to that stress, we’re faced with the possibility that research funding for Long COVID may be interrupted by the next presidential administration. “

HIV/AIDS and Long COVID are Very Similar
HIV/AIDS and Long COVID are Very Similar
“HIV/AIDS & COVID-19, particularly long COVID, share several significant similarities, especially in terms of viral persistence, T cell damage, immune system dysfunction, & activation of other pathogens. These parallels are important for understanding the long-term effects of both infections and their impact on the immune system.”

Study Finds 1 in 4 Americans May Have Long COVID
“A newly released study finds that one in four Americans may suffer from long COVID, a much higher rate than typically cited. Scientists at Mass General Brigham used a sophisticated AI tool for the peer-reviewed study. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggested that in 2022 roughly 6.9% of Americans had long COVID, the new research finds the actual number may be 22.8%.“

Americans Suffering From Long Covid Fight Insurers for Benefits
“Getting long-term disability benefits can be an uphill battle for the 5% of the US adult population CDC data shows is still affected by long Covid in 2024. Private insurers often push back heavily on long-term disability claims, and the unique pitfalls of appealing their decisions under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act create additional hurdles for plaintiffs.”
