“The Survivorship Bias That’s Killing Us: Long COVID and the Myth of “Moving On”

It’s easy to believe everything is fine when you only see the survivors. The people who didn’t die, who seem to be “back to normal,” are the faces we focus on. But what about the ones you don’t see? The coworker who hasn’t returned to the office. The friend who never seems to make plans anymore. The parent who used to juggle it all but now struggles to get through the day. These are the millions suffering from Long COVID.”

“The general population still seems to think “LongCovid” & COVID complications are these hazy, undefined, psychological problems which can be magically fixed by SSRIs & talk therapy, instead of like 10-15 different serious diagnoses you will be living with for the rest of your life, that requires routinely seeing a ton of different specialists. You won’t be working long hours to move up in the world—or working at all—because surviving all your chronic illnesses is now your unpaid FULL-TIME JOB. The chronic illnesses you acquire as a result of this particular novel pathogen are special though, because no one believes the cause (including your doctors) & all of society accuses you of malingering. It’s quite expensive & difficult to survive in these circumstances, thus many people are not.”

Nicotine exposure decreases likelihood of SARS-CoV-2 RNA expression and neuropathology in the hACE2 mouse brain but not moribundity
“Here we find exposure to nicotine in drinking water does not alter the moribundity of hACE2 mice. However, pre-exposure to nicotine decreased the likelihood of SARS-CoV-2 RNA expression and pathology in the brain. These results suggest mechanisms involving targets of nicotine could be leveraged to prevent the neurovirulence of SARS-CoV-2.”

“Histamine levels in alcoholic beverages may be underlying lower alcohol sales. Many individuals with Long Covid develop MCAS, where mast cells release excessive histamine and other inflammatory mediators, leading to symptoms like flushing, itching, headaches, and gastrointestinal issues. This can heighten sensitivity to histamine-rich foods and beverages, compounding histamine intolerance.”
