"Those who count on quote 'Hollywood' for support need to understand that this industry is watching very carefully who's going to stand up for them when their job is at stake. Don't ask me to write a check for you when you think your job is at risk and then don't pay any attention to me when my job is at stake,"

So you have no doubt heard about the insanity surrounding the shutting down of MegaUpload, particularly the wild story about how the file-sharing website's founder was arrested in high fashion. Well, this has all clearly spooked other file-sharing services, including FileSonic. If you go to its homepage, you're greeted by a message that reads: "All sharing functionality on FileSonic is now disabled. Our service can only be used to upload and retrieve files that you have uploaded personally." Not only that, but Uploaded.to is no longer available for use in the U.S.

Sales of tablet computers and e-book readers surged during the holiday season, causing the share of adults who own either device to nearly double, from 10% to 19%. These results are based on a pre-holiday survey conducted among people age 16 and older between Nov. 16 and Dec. 21, and two surveys of adults age 18 and older conducted in January.

Paul apparently set off an airport security full-body scanner “on a glitch,” a spokesman in Paul’s office told ABC News. The Paul staffer said TSA agents would not let Paul walk back through the body scanner and were demanding a full body pat-down.

Over the next week, we’ll be adding support for alternate names – be they nicknames, maiden names, or names in another script – alongside your common name. This name will show up on your Google+ profile and in the hovercards which appear over your name. In the next few weeks, we’ll be displaying it more broadly as part of your name in other areas of Google+ as well. So if you’re Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Jane Doe (Smith), or Saurabh Sharma (सौरभ शर्मा), you can now communicate your identity the way you want to.

Judge: Americans can be forced to decrypt their laptops | Privacy Inc. - CNET News
I find and conclude that the Fifth Amendment is not implicated by requiring production of the unencrypted contents of the Toshiba Satellite M305 laptop computer," Blackburn wrote in a 10-page opinion today. He said the All Writs Act, which dates back to 1789 and has been used to require telephone companies to aid in surveillance, could be invoked in forcing decryption of hard drives as well.

MegaUpload DIY record label plans made it a target tip conspiracists - SlashGear
Was MegaUpload‘s sudden fall at the hands of the US government in part pushed by Universal Media Group and fears the file sharing site was about to launch a DIY record label of its own? That’s the latest speculation in the ongoing digital download saga, with suggestions that MegaUpload was readying an upgrade to MegaBox, turning it into a hybrid cloud-locker, distribution platform and pseudo-label that would actually pay artists for offering their tracks for free.

Top recruits like Yuri Wright need to be careful on Twitter - Andy Staples - SI.com
Michigan stopped recruiting Wright because of his foul tweets. Don Bosco Prep, a Catholic school, expelled Wright for the feed, which has since been taken down. (Screen shots of the tweets litter the web. If you want to read them, they aren't difficult to find.) Wright committed to Colorado this week. This is not a reason to rip Colorado. Wright didn't commit a crime, after all. Still, the words we type have consequences. The maintenance of my own Twitter feed is not a job requirement, but SI would fire me in a heartbeat if I began unleashing streams of profanity on Twitter. My Twitter feed reflects my personal opinions, but those opinions reflect upon my employer.

We all know how Siri in the iPhone 4S made it such a big hit. There were similar voice controlled software available in the market but Siri managed to climb and stay on top as the best voice-activated personal assistant. Many other Voice controlled apps were seen in the market trying to compete with Siri. Most of these apps have one thing in common; they are only available for non-iOS phones. All these apps proved to be nothing more than simple dictation applications, or a front end for Google’s own voice services, leaving us to believe that to truly get a voice assistant that works we will have to own the iPhone 4S.

Available for Android as a beta, and for iOS as a final build, Evi seems to lack some of Siri’s natural language capabilities. For example, when we verbalized the question, “How much does a panda weigh?” Evi recorded “weigh” as “way” in her text interface, though her final response addressed weight

Facebook Inc. could file papers for its initial public offering as early as this coming week, people familiar with the matter said, as anticipation mounts for what is likely to be one of the biggest debuts for a U.S. company. The deal, seen as defining moment for the latest Web investing boom, could raise as much as $10 billion and value the social network between $75 billion and $100 billion, said people familiar with the matter. A valuation of $75 billion would be below earlier expectations.
