Apple announced today that it has appointed John Browett, former Dixons CEO, as Senior Vice President of its retail operations, responsible for the company's retail efforts worldwide. Browett, who previously held the position of Tesco.com CEO prior to his Dixons role, will report directly to Apple CEO Tim Cook who is "thrilled" to have Browett bring "his incredible retail experience to Apple."

The San Jose Mercury News reports that Apple has been granted planning permission to commence construction on what it describes as a "new prototype" Apple Store on 340 University Avenue in Palo Alto. That's only a block away from the company's current store at 451 University Avenue, which is expected to close down after the new one is opened.

Twitter will unveil a series of new tools in the next few months, including sophisticated analytical tools, according to Erica Anderson, Twitter's manager for news and journalism. Anderson said the analytical tools will better help publishers track the reach of tweets sent through the microblogging service. She made her comments Saturday at Columbia University's social media weekend in New York.

It seems there may be more partnerships between Angry Birds and music artists in the future, too. Hed explained that Rovio sees Angry Birds as a bona-fide "channel" now, with people spending so much time in the app, it is competing with the most popular TV shows in the US in terms of time spent.

acebook today launched a new app called Timeline Movie Maker, which creates a movie highlighting moments from your Timeline (you’ll thus need to get the new profile if you don’t have it yet, in order to use this app). Marketing agency Definition6 built the app with Facebook, and Definition6 CTO Paul Hernacki just made the announcement via Twitter: “Pure awesomeness- Facebook and @Definition6 are proud to launch www.timelinemoviemaker.com - Make an instant movie of your Facebook content.”

The term of copyright matches the US term of life of the author plus 70 years, beyond the Berne requirement and Canadian law. This was certainly a game-changing event. It was a demonstration of YouTube's looming succession to television as the most influential video platform. This was a triumph of a tech company over media companies. The production values were high, the program was engaging, and the content was timely. But for the public, it was no more of a paradigm shift than changing the TV channel.

Counting in that modified way, Canalys crowns Apple the “leading worldwide client PC vendor,” garnering 17% of the market, up 6 percentage points, year over year. The firm says that Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), formerly the top PC vendor by units, fell to second place and is battling hard with Lenovo, the only vendor aside from Apple to gain share. Dell (DELL) and Acer (2353TW) took fourth and fifth places, the firm believes, both losing share.

Whether you like the idea of “frictionless sharing” or not, Facebook has made a strong case for the service on stage at the Midem conference. Dan Rose, the VP of Partnerships for the company, says that over 5 billion songs have been shared on Facebook since last year’s f8 conference in September.
