Anthony Drendel - Blog - iOS Maps and China
for a large, large number of people, iOS 6 Maps has been a huge improvement over Google Maps. I'm talking about those of us who live in China (you know, the place with 1.3+ billion people and the second-largest economy in the world). Google Maps was always pretty terrible here. In the big cities and tourist centers, it was passable. Once you left China's large metropolises, however, you were pretty much on your own. You could usually see expressways, highways, and even a lot of smaller roads, but there were very, very few shops, restaurants, banks, ATMs, etc. listed. That has changed with iOS 6. Apple has chosen AutoNavi to provide map services within China. That was a smart move, because AutoNavi is a local Chinese company that provides very detailed maps of China.

Apple had over a year left on Google Maps contract, Google scrambling to build iOS app | The Verge
Apple's decision to ship its own mapping system in the iPhone 5 and iOS 6 was made over a year before the company's agreement to use Google Maps expired, according to two independent sources familiar with the matter. The decision, made sometime before Apple's WWDC event in June, sent Google scrambling to develop an iOS Google Maps app — an app which both sources say is still incomplete and currently not scheduled to ship for several months.

Apple's Lightning port dynamically assigns pins to allow for reversible use
Peter from Double Helix Cables first shared with AppleInsider last week his discovery that Apple's new Lightning connector cables feature integrated authentication chips. He has since taken an even closer look at Lightning and concluded that the layout of the pins must be dynamically assigned based on how the cable is physically plugged in to a device like the iPhone 5.

We’ve all heard the cliche about art imitating life, but how about art imitating Street View imitating life? It makes for a tangled web of the digital and physical mixing together to become some kind of simulacra squared. Or something. But this is what artist Paolo Cirio’s been doing in his Street Ghosts project. He creates life-size posters of blurred, glitchy images of anonymous people caught on Google Street View and plasters them onto the wall in the same spots where they were caught on camera.
