AnandTech - The Windows RT Review
AnandTech - The Windows RT Review
The problem was two parts software, one part hardware. Microsoft had developed a very interesting touch-oriented user interface for its handhelds, so at least one part of the equation was relatively straightforward. The hardware issue came down to this: the iOS and Android tablets succeeding in the market ran off ARM system-on-chips, which resulted in slim, power-efficient tablets that had idle times stretching for days. At the time, there was just nothing in terms of x86 hardware that could compete with that in low-power device realm (Clover Trail and Haswell, of course, change this part of the story considerably). The other question? How to converge the touch-centric UI with the classic desktop environment that had been the corner of Windows dating all the way back to 95.

Daring Fireball: Forstall Out; Ive Up
Jony Ive will provide leadership and direction for Human Interface (HI) across the company in addition to his role as the leader of Industrial Design. His incredible design aesthetic has been the driving force behind the look and feel of Apple’s products for more than a decade.

Inside Apple's major shakeup - Fortune Tech
It is being said that Forstall didn't get along with Jony Ive. The knighted designer won that battle. Apple named him the chief of all "human interface" on Monday. Reading between the lines, that means software in addition to hardware. Design lovers hated the paper "shredder" that Apple introduced with its Passbook product. Ive, a fan of minimalism, must have hated it too. Watch for Apple to kill it.

As one of Microsoft's four Windows Phone 8 device manufacturers -- the other three being Nokia, Samsung, and HTC -- Huawei's forced absence was linked to the pressure from the U.S. government, at least to the company's vice president Yu Chengdong.

Google Signs Deal With Warner Music Group - NYTimes.com
The news of the deal was tucked in a Google company blog post on Monday that was mostly about new models of its Nexus phones and tablets. But for Google’s music service, which has struggled to gain traction against iTunes, Amazon and the myriad of other digital services, it is an important step. It means that Google’s millions of Android users — whose devices do not have iTunes — will finally have an essentially complete catalog of MP3s to buy.

Village Voice sues Yelp for using “Best of” — paidContent
This isn’t the first time the Voice’s publisher has tried this trademark trick. Last year, the one-time icon sued Time Out New York over the magazine’s annual “best of NYC” issue. The publisher claimed it was asserting its intellectual property but Time Out New York counter-sued, arguing the term “best of” is generic. The Voice lawsuit provoked widespread derision from newer New York media sites like Gothamist.
