Facebook tries Google's WebP image format; users squawk | Internet & Media - CNET News
WebP, part of Google's effort to make the Web faster, offers smaller file sizes than JPEG, meaning that pages can load faster and that not as much data must be transferred over the network. WebP also is flexible: it offers animation and transparency support, and can replace PNG images as well in situations where lossless compression is desirable.

ARM has had a great quarter -- again. This time it's seen pre-tax profits soar 44 percent, while revenues are up 26 percent (to $209.4 million) since the same period last year. The company's thanking the continued adoption of its low-power chip designs, encompassing smartphones, mobile computing and even digital TVs and wearable tech. The guidelines – and they’re just that, suggestions, not requirements – are laid out in a 281-page report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (.PDF) and the Department of Transportation, which under the direction of outgoing transportation secretary Ray LaHood have made distracted driving a pet cause.

Let's Cut Through the Bitcoin Hype: A Hacker-Entrepreneur's Take | Wired Opinion | Wired.com
The internet’s proven to be a pretty big deal for global society, and Bitcoin could basically be thought of as the Internet, applied to Money. There’s an old comment that the internet interprets censorship as damage and routes around it. Sure, we’ve routed money over the internet for a while now, but those flows have always been managed, moderated, regulated by some vestige of authority. Bitcoin’s about as friendly to this sort of regulation as the rest of the internet is — not very. To put it another way: Bitcoin’s a dollar bill, with a teleporter built in. We can just poke in a few coordinates and poof, off it goes, with the ease of posting to some forum somewhere. That’s somewhat new.
