MediaBugs revamps its site with a new national focus » Nieman Journalism Lab
When it launched in public beta earlier this year, MediaBugs, Scott Rosenberg’s Knight News Challenge-winning fact-checking project, was focused on correcting errors found in publications in the Bay Area. Today, though, Mediabugs.org has undergone a redesign — not just in its interface (“just the usual iterative improvements,” Rosenberg notes), but in its scope. Overnight, MediaBugs has gone national.

Gmail in mobile Safari: now even more like a native app - Official Google Mobile Blog
Go to gmail.com from your iPhone and you’ll notice two improvements we’ve rolled out over the past few weeks. First, scrolling is snappier: the speed of scrolling reflects the speed of your swipe gesture. This is helpful for long conversations where a few quick flicks will get you to the information you need much faster than before. Second, the toolbars stay on screen while you’re scrolling rather than moving down into view after each scroll. Being able to access your toolbars from any point on the page should make it easier to triage your email and move around the app.

Lars Rasmussen, Father Of Google Maps And Google Wave, Heads To Facebook
When Google put their faith in Wave, an ambitious new project last year, they knew it was a gamble. But a big part of it was the team behind the project. A team led by Lars Rasmussen, the engineer best known as the co-creator of the hugely successful Google Maps. And now he’s left the company. And from what we hear, he’s heading to Facebook.
Microsoft: Our strategy with Silverlight has shifted | ZDNet
“Silverlight is our development platform for Windows Phone,” he said. Silverlight also has some “sweet spots” in media and line-of-business applications, he said. But when it comes to touting Silverlight as Microsoft’s vehicle for delivering a cross-platform runtime, “our strategy has shifted,” Muglia told me. Silverlight will continue to be a cross-platform solution, working on a variety of operating system/browser platforms, going forward, he said. “But HTML is the only true cross platform solution for everything, including (Apple’s) iOS platform,” Muglia said. Muglia said there definitely will be another version of Silverlight, and that it will be “very much in line,” in terms of functionality and features, as Silverlight 4, which Microsoft delivered in April of this year.

Microsoft profit jumps 51 percent with record Q1 revenue
Microsoft profit jumped 51 percent year over year and recorded record quarterly revenue during Q1 of its fiscal year 2011, the company said today, killing Wall Street estimates as skepticism surrounded Microsoft's cash cows. Net income skyrocketed from $3.57 billion in Q1FY10 to $5.41 billion in the quarter ending Sept. 30, launched by strong sales of Windows 7 and Office 2010. The year-ago period, however, was a low point as Microsoft weathered the poor economy. Earnings per share was 62 cents, eclipsing the Wall Street consensus estimate of 55 cents. And while analysts had expected revenue of $15.8 billion, Microsoft reported $16.2 billion -- up 25 percent over the year-ago period.

AppleInsider | Google founders wanted to hire Steve Jobs as company's first CEO
Google cofounders Larry Page and Sergey Brin considered hiring Apple CEO Steve Jobs as the company's first CEO, according to a new documentary. After interviewing a dozen unsuitable candidates during Google's early years, Page and Brin went to meet Jobs, a personal "hero" of theirs. The pair then asked investor John Doerr, "Why can't he be our CEO?" The anecdote comes from an episode on Page and Brin from the Bloomberg documentary series "Bloomberg Game Changers." Earlier this month, the Bloomberg series, which looks at "today's most influential leaders," aired an episode on Jobs.

What Netflix CEO hopes U.S. won't notice - The Hollywood Reporter
THR: Are you concerned that American Netflix subscribers will look north and ask for the same discount Canadians get at $7.99? Hastings: How much has it been your experience that Americans follow what happens in the world? It's something we'll monitor, but Americans are somewhat self-absorbed.
