5 reasons Google+ failed: One power user’s observations | SiliconANGLE
5 reasons Google+ failed: One power user’s observations | SiliconANGLE
I think it’s pretty obvious to everyone involved now though that Google has completely given up on Google+. Here are some of my observations on four years of Google+ — they are not all related and this is more of a rambling list than anything from someone who probably spent thousands of hours using the product.

0-day bug in fully patched OS X comes under active exploit to hijack Macs | Ars Technica
As Ars reported last week, the privilege-escalation bug stems from new error-logging features that Apple added to OS X 10.10. Developers didn't use standard safeguards involving additions to the OS X dynamic linker dyld, a failure that lets attackers open or create files with root privileges that can reside anywhere in the OS X file system. It was disclosed last week by security researcher Stefan Esser.

Researchers Create First Firmware Worm That Attacks Macs | WIRED
An attacker could first remotely compromise the boot flash firmware on a MacBook by delivering the attack code via a phishing email and malicious web site. That malware would then be on the lookout for any peripherals connected to the computer that contain option ROM, such as an Apple Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter, and infect the firmware on those. The worm would then spread to any other computer to which the adapter gets connected.

EFF, AdBlock and Others Launch New Do Not Track Standard | Threatpost | The first stop for security news
“The failure of the ad industry and privacy groups to reach a compromise on DNT has led to a viral surge in ad blocking, massive losses for Internet companies dependent on ad revenue, and increasingly malicious methods of tracking users and surfacing advertisements online,” said Disconnect CEO Casey Oppenheim. “Our hope is that this new DNT approach will protect a consumer’s right to privacy and incentivize advertisers to respect user choice, paving a path that allows privacy and advertising to coexist.”

Matchstick Cancels Streaming Stick, Reimburses Kickstarter Backers | Variety
“After struggling with the DRM development based on Firefox OS for most of this year, we realize continued development of DRM, though showing early signs of promise, will be a long and difficult road. We have come to the conclusion that we will not be able to reliably predict the completion date of the DRM development without significantly more research, development and integration. “

Microsoft unveils Xbox One DVR features, enabling recording and playback of free over-the-air TV - GeekWire
Xbox One owners in the U.S. and Canada have been able to watch free over-the-air TV without a cable subscription since April, and other countries before that. You need to purchase an $80 Hauppauge WinTV-955Q tuner and an HDTV antenna, and then it supports live programming of channels like CBS, NBC, FOX, and PBS.

Intel targets gamers with sixth-gen 'Skylake' CPU launch
Intel targets gamers with sixth-gen 'Skylake' CPU launch
Unfortunately, the i7-6700K offers just a modest performance increase (10 percent) over last-gen Haswell i7-4790K CPUs and little, if any, advantage over the current Haswell-E i7-5820K chip. However, the Skylake models are the first 14-nanometer performance CPUs that Intel has launched, because the lower-powered Broadwell 14-nanometer desktop chips aren't aimed at gamers. The smaller transistors should help overclocking, and rumor has it that the i7-6700K can be pushed to 5GHz, which may give it an edge over current tech. At any rate, with 10-nanometer "Cannonlake" CPUs now delayed, Skylake is it until next year.

Attackers can access Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive files without a user's password | ZDNet
Attackers can access Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive files without a user's password | ZDNet
The attack works by grabbing the password token, a small file that sits on a user's devices for convenience (which saves the user from entering their password each time). When the token is obtained, either through a phishing attack or a drive-by exploit, it can be used to fool a new machine into thinking the attacker is the account's owner. From there, the attacker can access and steal files, and even add malware or ransomware (which is on the rise) to the victim's cloud folder, which can be used for further attacks.

Hackers can remotely steal fingerprints from Android phones | ZDNet
Of the four attacks outlined by the researchers, one in particular -- dubbed the "fingerprint sensor spying attack" -- can "remotely harvest fingerprints in a large scale," Zhang told ZDNet by email. The attack, which was confirmed on the HTC One Max and Samsung's Galaxy S5, allows a hacker to stealthily acquire a fingerprint image from an affected device because device makers don't fully lock down the sensor.

Verizon will drop phone contracts, end discounted phones - Yahoo News
Under the new plans, which take effect Aug. 13, prices for voice, text and data services will drop by roughly $20 per month compared with subsidized plans. But customers will no longer get the subsidies on the phone, valued at about $19 for an iPhone 6. But there are variations, so some will pay a bit more, others a bit less. Verizon is also streamlining its data plans to four main options, ranging from "small" at 1 gigabyte to "x-large" at 12 gigabytes, all sharable under family plans. Verizon currently has 15 options ranging from 0.5 gigabyte to 100 gigabytes. Two gigabytes is plenty for most single-line customers, though a few hours of streaming video could eat that up. Customers will no longer have two-year commitments, but they might be stuck with Verizon for two years anyway as monthly installments for the phone stretch over that time.

Force Touch on iPhone 6S revealed: expect shortcuts, faster actions across iOS | 9to5Mac
Because of its small display, the Apple Watch’s Force Touch feature is consistently represented by a grid of options that cover the entirety of the current view on the screen. On the new iPhones, Force Touch will be represented in three ways: no additional user interface as with the subtle integration on the new MacBooks, a user interface that appears surrounding the finger where the Force Touch gesture is conducted, or a shortcut list toward the bottom of the display akin to a typical options list across iOS.

The Invention Of Alphabet Is The Ultimate Larry Page Move | Fast Company | Business + Innovation
I don't expect human beings not employed by Google to divide up Google and Alphabet's operations into neat mental buckets. The Google brand is among the most resonant ones on the planet, and Page says that Alphabet won't even be a consumer brand. A few years from now, people will surely be talking about "Google's self-driving cars," even if they theoretically have nothing to do with Google.

To Pin or Not to Pin—Helping App Developers Bullet Proof Their TLS Connections | USENIX
owever, in a nominalactual comparison, we find that only 45 apps actually implement pinning. We collected developer feedback from 45 respondents and learned that only a quarter of them grasp the concept of pinning, but still find pinning too complex to use. Based on their feedback, we built an easy-to-use web-application that supports developers in the decision process and guides them through the correct deployment of a pinning-protected TLS implementation.
