The Answer Sheet - How Shanghai topped PISA rankings -- and why it's not big news in China
The Answer Sheet - How Shanghai topped PISA rankings -- and why it's not big news in China
These two systems are diametrically opposed in one sense: Shanghai relies heavily on testing to meet its goals; Finland emphasizes child-centered methods. Yet they have these important things in common: Neither of them does what the United States is now promoting: They do not hand students over to privately managed schools; they do not accept teachers who do not intend to make teaching their profession; they do not have principals who are non-educators; they do not have superintendents who are non-educators; they do not "turn around" schools by closing them or privatizing them; they do not "improve" schools by firing the principal or the teachers. They respect their teachers. They focus relentlessly on improving teaching and learning, as it is defined in their culture and society.

Facebook, one of the largest websites in the world, voluntarily shut itself down Thursday after the code for several new products was made public before the products were ready for launch, the company confirmed to Wired.com. The immense online social network was forced to turn itself off in order to resolve the problem. The downtime lasted approximately 30 minutes, from about 4:15 p.m. EST until 4:45 p.m. EST.

Wireless carriers openly considering charging per service (update: audio) -- Engadget
Wireless carriers openly considering charging per service (update: audio) -- Engadget
That slide above is no joke -- it comes from a marketing webinar put on by two companies that count Verizon, AT&T and Vodafone as clients, and it describes a system that identifies customer internet activity and charges a different rate for using Facebook than watching YouTube, while allowing access to Vodafone services for free. Yes, that's basically the nightmare scenario for net neutrality advocates. The two companies behind the slide are Allot Communications and Openet, which sell subscriber-management tools to carriers around the world -- tools that Allot's director of marketing says can scan even encrypted packets to determine what service customers are using and charge accordingly. We're not making this up -- here's the direct quote from the webinar:
