Apple Inc. may face a production loss of 500,000 iPad 2 tablets after the explosion at Foxconn Technology Group’s plant in Chengdu, China, according to research firm IHS ISuppli.

FreeWheel reported that four-fifths of all mobile video views happen on Apple iOS devices. The iPhone and iPod touch each account for about 30 percent of all video views that happen on mobile devices, with the remaining 20 percent being attributed to Android devices, according to the report. Other devices account for less than one percent of all video views on mobile devices, according to FreeWheel.

In the coming days, Apple will deliver a Mac OS X software update that will automatically find and remove Mac Defender malware and its known variants. The update will also help protect users by providing an explicit warning if they download this malware.

Google Inc. is expected to disclose details about how consumers will be able to make store purchases, redeem coupons, and get loyalty points by waving smartphones in front of a small reader at the checkout counter, said people familiar with the matter. At an event Thursday in New York, the Web-search company is planning to show off the technology, called near field communication, which is embedded in newer smartphones powered by Google's Android software and that can help turn the devices into a kind of electronic wallet, these people said.

Zynga’s valuation in its last round of funding was $10 billion, but it is likely to price itself higher in an offering. After all, LinkedIn now has a market valuation of $9 billion, double its pre-IPO price. Whatever the price, a Zynga IPO is a major coup, especially given how quickly it has morphed into one of the most important forces in online gaming, largely via distribution on the Facebook platform.

Otto Berkes, the last of the original Xbox founders still at the company, submitted his resignation this afternoon. Berkes went on to lead development of a new category of ultraportable, wireless touchscreen computers that Microsoft called Ultra Mobile PCs. Among the prototypes Berkes built was a slate-like touchscreen computing device that Bill Gates showed at a 2005 conference in Seattle, years before there were even whispers about Apple's iPad. But the first generation of UltraMobile PCs were expensive, the hardware wasn't as advanced and Microsoft lost interest before the category blossomed.

The problems keep coming for Sony. On Tuesday the company confirmed that someone had hacked into its website and stolen about 2,000 customer names and e-mail addresses. Close to 1,000 of the records have already been posted online by a hacker calling himself Idahc, who says he's a "Lebanese grey-hat hacker." Idahc found a common Web programming error, called an SQL injection flaw, that allowed him to dig up the records on the Canadian version of the Official Sony Ericsson eShop, an online store for mobile phones and accessories.

When asked about NFC and its potential, Tilenius said that the technology is an important opportunity for Android, telling the audience, “we’re making a big bet on it as a company. There is a lot of potential there.”

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet, originally announced with Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) on board, will now ship with the updated Android 3.1 operating system. Samsung has updated its Galaxy Tab 10.1 product page to reflect the update, and a representative for Samsung Mobile confirmed in a comment on the firm’s official Facebook page that “the original had 3.0 but now it will [ship] with Android 3.1.” The new operating system should include support for Google’s Android movie rental service, Adobe Flash Player 10.2 support, USB-connected peripherals, resizable home screen widgets, and more.

New European Union privacy regulations that require Web sites to get consent from EU users before tracking them around the rest of the Web will go into effect Wednesday. The directive is aimed at cookies used for targeted advertising, and applies to companies operated in any country.

Now, the company has a new video showing how it's using sea water to cool its new data center in Hamina, Finland. The water is sucked in through granite tunnels -- the site used to be a paper mill, so the tunnels were already there. Google says it used a tiny submarine to make sure the tunnels weren't blocked.

While there has been speculation of a 4-inch qHD screen on the Droid 3, our tipster has now confirmed it. The keyboard has been modified as first seen in the leaked photo shown below from Howard Forums, but we now know for sure that a fifth row of keys has been added, finally bringing those dedicated number buttons that people have been looking for in the Droid series.

Trying hard to stand out from all the e-reader news from the past two days, Amazon says it is cutting the price of its 3G Kindle to $164. The $25 price difference is being made possible through the introduction of advertising on the platform. The so-called “Kindle 3G with Special Offers” is available starting today and will ship immediately.

Systrom also revealed that Instagram currently has 4.25 million registered users after only seven months of existence. That means they have more than 1 million users per employee. “It turns out if you make something that people want it spreads really well,” says Systrom. “People wanted to take pictures and have them shared across multiple networks all at once.”

The decision is more about a change in strategy, rather than the company closing the door third party integration after the Microsoft acquisition, according a Gartner analyst. Skype for Asterisk is based on proprietary software that allows the open-source telephony system to join Skype as a native client, according to Digium, which has put out a product notice detailing the change. Digium drives the development of Asterisk and sells commercial products based on it.

So why, then, did Microsoft announce Mango six months before it will be available? Momentum and mindshare. Microsoft had already announced a number of features in the Mango update. It previewed multitasking, IE9, SkyDrive, and other features for journalists during Mobile World Congress in February, and again during its MIX developer conference. There was no real reason for Microsoft to get up on stage a third time and provide yet another song and dance about upcoming features.
