Introducing the Nokia N9: all it takes is a swipe! | Nokia Conversations - The official Nokia Blog
At the Nokia Connection event in Singapore today, Nokia introduced the Nokia N9, the first-ever pure touch smartphone that is all about making things simpler. Nokia N9 focuses on the most important things that people do: use apps, get notifications and switch between different activities. Navigating the UI is done with a simple gesture, a swipe of a finger. Let’s have a closer look at what the Nokia N9 is bringing to the game.

You now have another reason to check your privacy settings. According to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, Social Intelligence Corp, has been given the legal thumbs up to archive seven years worth of your Facebook posts. These archives will be used by SIC (oh the applicability of the acronym) as part of their background checking service for job applicants.

Why Not Tumblr | Smarterware
Why Not Tumblr | Smarterware
Lately Tumblr's been getting lots of attention from name bloggers like Steve Rubel (who closed all his existing blogs and moved exclusively to Tumblr), Rick Sanchez, Dan Patterson, and my friend here in San Diego Mitch Wagner. So when I began an effort to simplify my blog life, I considered switching this blog to Tumblr and making it my primary platform like Steve and Mitch did. In the end I decided not to, for an important practical reason: the data you enter on Tumblr is locked in.

Start-up Lytro Aims to Sharpen Focus of Entire Camera Industry - Ina Fried - News - AllThingsD
Start-up Lytro Aims to Sharpen Focus of Entire Camera Industry - Ina Fried - News - AllThingsD
A Mountain View start-up is promising that its camera, due later this year, will bring the biggest change to photography since the transition from film to digital. Ordinarily, I’m turned off by such hyperbole, but after having seen a demo from Lytro, that statement seems downright reasonable. The breakthrough is a different type of sensor that captures what are known as light fields, basically all the light that is moving in all directions in the view of the camera. That offers several advantages over traditional photography, the most revolutionary of which is that photos no longer need to be focused before they are taken.

Is it an involved process? Yes, but it’s also a very costly one. The basic cost of submitting an application is $185,000 per gTLD. If you submit a batch of them times that cost by the number of domains. $5,000 is required on requesting the application form, and the other $180,000 is wired to ICANN when you submit the form.

FBI fat-thumbs data centre raid • The Register
A bungled FBI raid on a data centre has taken out an unknown number of Web sites. Apparently targeting a particular – but unnamed – customer of DigitalOne, the G-men seized three enclosures of equipment, according to the New York Times. Among the collateral damage is New York publisher the Cubed Network, and the Pinboard bookmarking site, which is now operating from a backup server. Pinboard has been unable to confirm whether or not its machines were among those lifted by the FBI, only that its main database server is offline and that it’s running with reduced capabilities.
