Today at M.I.T., the Knight Foundation showcased 16 projects selected as the winners of the 2011 Knight News Challenge. Now in its fifth year, this media-innovation contest included $1 million in support from Google. As you’ll see in the full list of winners, these initiatives come from organizations large and small and are reminders that entrepreneurship can be sparked anywhere. Here are just a few examples of the creative ways the journalism community around the world is merging traditional skills with an online landscape:

The new OneBox includes a graph for historical exchange rates and an interactive tool that lets you select a different currency from a long list or change the value you want to covert and instantly get the result.

"Rights holders in the UK are proposing to appoint a 'council' and an 'expert body' to decide which websites should be blocked by ISPs for infringing copyright. The controversial Digital Economy Act made provisions for sites accused of hosting copyrighted material to be blocked by British ISPs. 'The cost of the proposed scheme is not indicated, but is likely to be substantial, including the running cost of two non-judicial independent bodies and the cost to ISPs of permanently blocking websites,' Consumer Focus said."

Google said Friday that it would retire Google Health and Google PowerMeter, neither of which achieved the critical mass that Google felt would be necessary to continue it. In the case of Google Health, the site will remain operational until Jan. 1, 2012. From then until Jan. 1, 2013, users will not be able to use the site but will be able to download their data. Google PowerMeter, on the other hand, will be retired on Sept. 16 of this year.
