HP Exec Is Having Second-Thought About Killing the TouchPad | Cult of Mac
“Tablet computing is a segment of the market that’s relevant, absolutely,” HP Personal Systems Group chief Todd Bradley told Reuters in China. Although he was in Beijing, it wasn’t to sell WebOS to the Chinese, the HP executive insisted. However, “a number” of companies have expressed interest in using the OS, he told the news agency. Samsung could be one of those eyeing the software. As we’ve reported, the handset and tablet maker is looking at WebOS to bolster its position against Apple.

Facebook Just Bowed Out of the Check-In War With Foursquare | Betabeat — News, gossip and intel from Silicon Alley 2.0.
While some folks might attribute the rumbling feeling that hit New York this afternoon to a 5.9 earthquake in Virginia, Betabeat now knows better. It was the tectonic reverberations of defeat, as Facebook quietly phased out the Places feature of its mobile app which everyone was screaming for months would kill Foursquare.

Couple Can Sue Laptop-Tracking Company for Spying on Sex Chats | Threat Level | Wired.com
An Ohio woman and her boyfriend can sue a laptop-tracking company that recorded their sexually explicit communications in an effort to identify thieves who stole the computer the woman was using. U.S. District Judge Walter Rice ruled last week against Absolute Software, which provides software and services for tracking stolen computers. Absolute sought a summary judgment in its favor, insisting that one of its theft recovery agents acted properly when he captured sexually explicit images of Susan Clements-Jeffrey communicating via webcam with her boyfriend and passed them to police in an effort to recover the stolen computer.

Apple wants its 3G MacBook prototype back | Apple Talk - CNET News
Apple wants a North Carolina man to return a prototype notebook computer he purchased on Craigslist earlier this year, CNET has learned. Three weeks ago, photos of the device emerged in an eBay listing by Carl Frega, a North Carolina resident who had purchased the machine from someone on Craigslist for parts to fuel his repair business. Upon opening it up, he discovered that the machine was unlike any Apple had ever released to the public.

he design and user interface here is quite simply one of the worst things I’ve ever seen in any software — let alone something that is going to be used by hundreds of millions of users. It’s not just that it’s extremely cluttered, uneven, and confusing (all of which it is), it’s that it shows that a massive part of Microsoft is heading in the wrong direction when in comes to the future of computing. It’s my belief that simplicity and elegance are increasingly going to win the day as computing continues to be interwoven into our everyday lives. This Windows Explorer disaster shows that Microsoft believes the opposite.

We knew that using a ribbon for Explorer would likely be met with skepticism by a set of power-users (like me), but there are clear benefits in ways that the ribbon: Exposes hidden features that they already use but which require third party add-ons to use in the Explorer UI today. Provides keyboard shortcuts for every command in the ribbon, something many people have been asking for. Provides UI customization with the quick access toolbar, taking us back to a customization level that is basically equivalent to Windows XP.

Under both the Employer and Education fields, users can cycle through a pre-populated list of companies or colleges and universities, an option that could soon group users by their affiliations but also provide companies and education establishments with a dedicated page of their own.

We do know that it will be at least a few weeks before you can purchase. See more information in the updated FAQs below.

Despite Apple's Denial, iTunes Match is Streaming - Mac Rumors
Traditional streaming services maintain constant connections, buffering only a small amount of the currently-playing track at any given time. Apple's streaming solution appears to download each track in its entirety once streaming begins. Upon tapping on the track to begin playing without initiating the full iCloud download process, the track begins playing immediately just as with other streaming services. But in reality, the full track appears to be downloaded to a local cache on the user's device, allowing for fast access to any portion of the track.

U.S. Files Antitrust Complaint to Block AT&T, T-Mobile Merger - Bloomberg
The U.S. government sued to block AT&T Inc.’s proposed $39 billion acquisition of T-Mobile USA Inc., saying the deal would “substantially lessen competition” in the wireless market. The Justice Department complaint was filed today in federal court in Washington. The U.S. is seeking a declaration that Dallas-based AT&T’s takeover of T-Mobile, a unit of Deutsche Telekom AG (DTE), would violate U.S. antitrust law and a court order blocking any arrangement implementing the deal.

Java founder Gosling leaves Google for startup | The Industry Standard - InfoWorld
After only a few months at Google, Java founder James Gosling has left the search engine giant to go to a small startup company specializing in ocean-based robotics. Gosling, who joined Google in late March, said in blog post Tuesday that he has moved on to Liquid Robotics, where he is chief software architect. "They have a growing fleet of autonomous vehicles that rove the ocean collecting data from a variety of onboard sensors and uploading it to the cloud. The robots have a pile of satellite uplink/GSM/WiMax communication gear and redundant GPS units," Gosling said.

Sure, the Galaxy S II for AT&T may look a lot like the Galaxy S II that launched in Europe a couple of months ago, but it also looks like the Infuse 4G’s baby brother. However, unlike the 4.5-inch Infuse, the S II has a 4.3-inch display, which makes for a more grippable and pocketable form factor. On the software and performance front, the demo phones seemed quite fast with very little TouchWiz lag. We’re planning to review the device closer to launch, but in the meantime, check out the pictures below.

Hands On: Sony Tablet S | News & Opinion | PCMag.com
Sony is a master of design. Its products always look good, and the new Sony Tablet S is the prettiest Google Android Honeycomb tablet I've seen so far. It'll sell for a premium price, but not too bad, and if it works well, it'll definitely stand out in a sea of similar iPad competitors. I got some time with an early version of the tablet, and I'm impressed.
