We love complex, deep discussions. We've seen or been part of many discussions — strategic discussions at work, discussions on AI alignment, on technical design documents, etc. For us, the most frustrating issues with complex discussions are (1) impulsive responses and (2) lack of structure.

The how, where, why, and when we communicate. Long form asynchronous? Real-time chat? In-person? Video? Verbal? Written? Via email? In Basecamp? How do we keep everyone in the loop without everyone getting tangled in everyone else’s business? It’s all in here.

I chose this metaphor because animal domestication is a gradual process that isn’t always deliberate, and typically revolves around one group becoming dependent upon another. For example: there’s evidence that domestication of dogs began with socialization, resulting in not-entirely-artificial selection promoting genes that resulted in more friendliness with and dependence upon humans
