Taking notes from YouTube videos in Obsidian
In this video, I talk about five different ways to take notes on YouTube videos in Obsidian, for those (like me) who love learning things on YouTube and want a way to capture new thoughts in Obsidian. I mention a few community plugins, a browser extension, and a separate service as well as my workflow for just using vanilla Obsidian, so you can take your pick! // TIMESTAMPS 00:00 Intro 00:35 Method 1 - Embed video 02:04 Method 2 - Media Extended plugin 04:43 Method 3 - Timestamp notes plugin 07:01 Method 4 - YiNote browser extension 10:30 Method 5 - Readwise Reader 14:45 Bonus: Readwise Ghostreader // RESOURCES MENTIONED Readwise: https://ift.tt/SsjHBOC Shortform: https://ift.tt/ApCJ0OV My video on Readwise Reader: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNH1JDOmGJw If you want to learn more about Obsidian, check out my course for beginners, Obsidian for Everyone: https://ift.tt/0NMpjSa --- // ABOUT ME Site: https://ift.tt/KCn2k1h Mastodon: https://ift.tt/SxH86wi My travel YouTube channel: https://youtube.com/c/luckydippers k6 YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/k6test // APPS I USE - Obsidian: https://obsidian.md - Readwise: https://ift.tt/SsjHBOC - Shortform: https://ift.tt/ApCJ0OV - Reclaim: https://ift.tt/0hyPA5p // GEAR https://ift.tt/5UcaMvY // WANT TO SUPPORT ME? ❤️ Join my Patreon and get my sample vault with templates: https://ift.tt/lZH2pNc ☕ Buy me a coffee: https://ift.tt/GXkz0Qy Note: Some of the links above are affiliate links, which means I may get a small percentage when you sign up using those links. Everything I wish I knew when starting to use Obsidian — Nicholas Seitz Photographer
Everything I wish I knew when starting to use Obsidian — Nicholas Seitz Photographer
I made plenty of mistakes when starting out with Obsidian.md, and it took me months to find high-value workflows. Hopefully, you can skip some of the pain I experienced and get off the ground even faster.
I had a few notes that were extremely long and formatted in many pretty ways, yet I was not really able to generate new insight or organically understand two ideas in relationship to one another. I was never sure where to put a new note, and when I finally did decide to make a new note,I felt like I was doing too much busywork.I could never remember where I wrote something down, and had to navigate in and out of Obsidian folders or search to find the note I had just worked on. I was only navigating using the file-browser or search-based functions of Obsidian- if there were links in files, they served little purpose other than “I think this is how I’m supposed to use the program.”
Break tasks into discrete steps
The best advice I’ve found for how to push through this point is to understand what the steps you’re trying to accomplish are, and to separate every process into discrete steps that you can focus on doing one at a time. A “lifecycle” for a note for me currently looks like this:

Obsidian As A Second Brain: The ULTIMATE Tutorial
Obsidian As A Second Brain: The ULTIMATE Tutorial
This is the only Obsidian tutorial you'll ever need, from start to finish. 🥳 Sign up for my free productivity tips newsletter! ➡️ https://ift.tt/aOpusmK == DESCRIPTION == I'm dabi, a doctor and YouTuber, and I've made the single most in-depth YouTube guide to Obsidian on the internet. I've created this 13-part course that was initially $97, but now I've released it to you for free! This is my opinionated guide to how I use Obsidian as a Second Brain and Zettelkasten. - Make Obsidian a digital Second Brain, so that you never ever forget anything you think about - Use Obsidian as a Zettelkasten - Capture thoughts extremely quickly, without worrying about structure until later - Use Obsidian's powerful search functions to find anything you've ever thought about - Synthesise and distill important ideas as part of a Zettelkasten, so that your most important thoughts are always top of mind - ...and more! I spent a ridiculous amount of time on this course (a *ridiculous* amount), because originally I set out to make the most in-depth paid course. 📚 Make sure to bookmark it and share it with your friends, so you can come back to it as needed! There's no need to do it in one go, as originally it was meant to be done one lesson at a time. 🎉 THIS VIDEO IS FULLY SUBTITLED. I've tried to make the subtitles as accurate as possible, to make things easier to understand, so I recommend turning them on. :) but I do apologise if I mess up here and there. 00:00:00 - Once $97, now a YouTube video! 00:00:36 - Introduction: Pages and Links 00:23:31 - Hashtags 00:27:52 - Links vs Hashtags 00:38:47 - The Obsidian Zettelkasten 00:53:46 - Search 01:07:14 - Special Formatting 01:16:33 - Dataviews in Obsidian 01:27:45 - Version Control 01:37:03 - Templates 01:40:43 - Backing Up Obsidian Files 01:42:49 - PDFs in Obsidian 01:45:31 - Plugins in Obsidian 01:58:02 - Yay, finished! == WHO AM I? == I'm Dr David Liu - a medical doctor (specialised in General Practice/Family Medicine) and YouTuber who loves anime. :) My channel is about medicine, tech, note-taking software, books, anime, and AI! Transcript: One thing I’ve learned from writing technical documentation in the last few years is that good writing is skimmable, at least in the digital age. So since I look at my notes in Obsidian the same way as I do a sort of personal documentation, I think that a lot of the same principles apply. Today I wanna talk about an early access feature that the Obsidian team rolled out two weeks ago, and it’s called Callouts.

How I plan my day with Obsidian | Daily Notes
In 2022 I searched high and low for a software that I could use to generate my own "wiki". I later found out that most call this a "second brain" or "personal knowledge management system". Fortunately, I came across Obsidian and fell in love. As I tinker around with Obsidian, I realise that it's powerful and flexible enough to be my task management system. In this video, I will demonstrate how I use Obsidian to manage my daily tasks and how my Daily Notes document looks like. Write notes on one idea with propositional titles. Let structure emerge.Figure out ways to let notes “bump into” each other.Break down tasks into discrete stepsTake small bites every day.I’ll end with several “avoid this” notes which are corollary to the first five points:Do not write long notes with many ideasDo not box yourself into rigid structuresDon’t write bad linksDon’t do it all at once (you won't finish everything)Don’t imagine a day when you’ll catch up.
