Wer "Gulag" hört, denkt an unmenschliche Lebensbedingungen, schwere körperliche Arbeit, drakonische Strafen, Mangelernährung, Erschöpfung, Krankheit, Tod. Der Begriff Gulag ist zum Synonym für das sowjetische Repressionssystem geworden, dem Millionen Menschen zum Opfer fielen. Die Abkürzung Gulag steht für das russische "Glavnoe Upravlenije Lagerej" und bedeutet "Hauptverwaltung der Lager". Es bezeichnet ein umfassendes System von Straf- und Arbeitslagern ("Besserungsarbeitslager") sowie Verbannungsgebieten auf dem Gebiet der ehemaligen Sowjetunion, das in den 1920er Jahren eingerichtet und systematisch ausgebaut wurde. Bis Mitte der 1950er Jahre durchliefen schätzungsweise 20 Millionen Menschen das Lagersystem. Die genaue Zahl der Todesopfer ist unbekannt.
