A Quick Guide to Using Tweego
A Quick Guide to Using Tweego
One problem with Twine is that it can start to lag when your story gets too big (often around 300 passages). For larger games, it may be better to break it up into multiple smaller files. This guide explains how to use Tweego to combine multiple HTML files created in Twine into a single file.

Twine Screen Reader: A Browser Extension for Improving the Accessibility of Twine Stories for People with Visual Impairments | Interactive Storytelling
Twine exports stories to HTML, so in theory the content should be reasonably accessible to screen readers (as long as you add alt text for images etc.). In practice, some of the Twine-specific HTML elements don't always work well with screen readers. This paper discusses how the authors created a screen reader browser extension to improve the accessibility of Twine stories built with Harlowe and Sugarcube (the two most common story formats).

Hana Feels
Hana Feels

An example of interactive fiction built in Twine. This isn't exactly a training branching scenario, and there isn't always a clearly right answer. While I don't want to give any spoilers, this deals with some mental health topics that probably justify a content warning.

From a structure perspective, I like how the choices themselves are pretty short, but the actual dialogue is often a little longer.

I also think the layout works really effectively with a look like chat bubbles, but just having the choices at the bottom and not bothering with scrolling or fancy animation. Behind the scenes, there's clearly some scoring happening to reflect how Hana feels, how she responds, and what ending you see.

This was also interesting because you make choices for multiple characters who interact with Hana, rather than seeing it from her perspective. Again without giving spoilers, this story structure might be helpful for dealing with other sensitive topics like DEI.

Twine project that reports to xAPI. This is way more technical than the projects I have done, but they definitely got Twine reporting to an LRS. The files are all available openly, and there's a wiki explaining the process. The scenario itself is about using ChatGPT for writing multiple choice assessments.

Chatterpast
A lovely chat simulation built in Twine with the Trialogue story format where students can "chat" with characters about their lives in Iron Age and Roman era Scotland, England, and Wales. There's a teacher's guide as a supplement for classroom use.

Twine: The basics (browser-based)
Twine: The basics (browser-based)
A tutorial on the basics of Twine. This uses CSS rather than enchant macros for formatting (which is probably a better strategy in the long run, especially for larger games, but a little harder for people to learn initially if they don't already know CSS). The course is built in Rise with an overview of the features.

This hasn't been updated in 2 years, but it's a tool for adding Google Analytics tracking to Twine games. While getting xAPI to work with Twine is still probably the ideal option for most learning applications, analytics data would provide a lot of useful info too.

Lesson plans – Teaching with Twine
Lesson plans – Teaching with Twine
This post includes lesson plans for teaching students how to use Twine, either in a single 50-minute session or in two days with extra time for practicing in the tool. These plans are a few years old, so a few details have changed, but the overall structure makes sense.

Using Twine for Classroom Engagement - ACTion
This is a summary of a project at the University of Toronto using Twine to create an educational game, plus an overview of Twine.
Although Twine is a tool for creating “games”, this project goes beyond games and gamification to think creatively about how the functions of Twine can be used to create activities that allow students to more directly engage with learning content in a hands-on experiential format that may not be possible in a traditional classroom learning space.

Storyboarding Branched Scenarios - ThinkingKap
Storyboarding Branched Scenarios - ThinkingKap
This is something I've struggled with--a good method for storyboarding branching scenarios. I've used several different Word and PowerPoint templates in the past, none of which have quite worked the way I wanted. I can write the branching in a linear document without much trouble (I once drafted one longhand in a notebook), but it makes my SMEs brains explode to try to follow them. I've seen recommendations for Twine in the past, and this explains in more detail how it works as a storyboarding tool.
