How this McMaster researcher is changing lives with healthy poop
Nikhil Pai always knew he wanted to work in pediatrics. What he wasn’t expecting is how much of his work would involve poop. Pai is a pediatric gastroenterologist and an associate professor with McMaster University’s Department of Pediatrics. He considers himself a clinician-scientist. It’s a position that allows him to ask: How can I advance [...]Read More...

Comparison between washed microbiota transplantation and infliximab: Medical cost during long-term management in patients with inflammatory bowel disease - PubMed
This study demonstrated that WMT could dramatically reduce the cost and duration of hospitalizations in the long-term sustainment in the current Chinese IBD cohort. Compared with IFX, WMT could be a good way for the patients with IBD achieving long-term sustainment and saving medical costs.

Engineered Secretory Immunoglobulin A provides insights on antibody-based effector mechanisms targeting Clostridiodes difficile - PubMed
Secretory (S) Immunoglobin (Ig) A is the predominant mucosal antibody, which mediates host interactions with commensal and pathogenic microbes, including Clostridioides difficile . SIgA adopts a polymeric IgA structure that is bound by secretory component (SC). Despite significance, how SIgA …

Azithromycin Treatment for Acne Vulgaris: A Case Report on the Risk of Clostridioides difficile Infection - PubMed
BACKGROUND Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) is a gram-positive, anaerobic, spore-forming bacillus. It can lead to pseudomembranous colitis characterized by electrolyte disturbances, toxic megacolon, and septic shock. The risk of C. difficile infection is higher with use of certain classes of ant …

CHICAGO — Treatment with Rebyota did not affect concurrent medication use in patients with inflammatory bowel disease and recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection, Jessica R. Allegretti, MD, MPH, explains in this Healio video. Allegretti presented data at Digestive Disease Week on safety outcomes and concomitant medication changes after treatment with Rebyota (fecal microbiota,

The practice of fecal microbiota transplantation in inflammatory bowel disease - PubMed
Current evidence posits a central role for gut microbiota and the metabolome in the pathogenesis and progression of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) has been established as a means to manipulate this microbiome safely and sustainably. Several aspects of the te …

Fecal Microbiota Transplantation: Information for the Pediatrician - PubMed
Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) involves the delivery of an entire microbial community from a healthy donor to a recipient with the intention of ameliorating or curing a specific disease. Current evidence strongly supports a role for FMT in the treatment of Clostridiodes difficile infection, …

Probiotic Clostridium butyricum ameliorates cognitive impairment in obesity via the microbiota-gut-brain axis - PubMed
Obesity is a risk factor for cognitive dysfunction and neurodegenerative disease, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). The gut microbiota-brain axis is altered in obesity and linked to cognitive impairment and neurodegenerative disorders. Here, we targeted obesity-induced cognitive impairment by test …

Fecal microbiota transplantation regulates the microbiota-gut-spinal cord axis to promote recovery after spinal cord injury - PubMed
Spinal cord injury (SCI) is devastating for patients, and currently lacks effective treatments. Dysbiosis commonly occurs after SCI and has significant immunomodulatory effects, but its impact on recovery remains unclear. The current study investigated the effects and mechanisms of fecal microbiota …

Clostridioides difficile PCR ribotypes 001 and 084 can trigger autophagy process in human intestinal Caco-2 cells - PubMed
Autophagy is a homeostatic process that can promote cell survival or death. However, the exact role of autophagy in Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) is still not precisely elucidated. Here, we investigate the role of distinct C. difficile ribotypes (RTs) in autophagy induction using Caco-2 c …
