Here, we describe the epidemiology, diagnostics, and treatment of Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) in the primary health care setting. CDI is traditionally considered as a healthcare associated infection. However, infections with onset in the community represent a large proportion of …

The role of microbiota in the development and treatment of gastric cancer - PubMed
The stomach was once considered a sterile organ until the discovery of Helicobacter pylori (HP). With the application of high-throughput sequencing technology and macrogenomics, researchers have identified fungi and fivemajor bacterial phyla within the stomachs of healthy individuals. These m …

Modulation of gut microbiota: a novel approach to enhancing the effects of immune checkpoint inhibitors - PubMed
Although immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have greatly improved the prognosis of some cancer patients, the majority still fail to respond adequately, and the available biomarkers cannot reliably predict drug efficacy. The gut microbiota has received widespread attention among the various intrinsi …

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and gut microbial dysbiosis- underlying mechanisms and gut microbiota mediated treatment strategies - PubMed
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is by far the most prevalent form of liver disease worldwide. It's also the leading cause of liver-related hospitalizations and deaths. Furthermore, there is a link between obesity and NAFLD risk. A projected 25% of the world's population grieves from NAFLD, …

Fecal Microbiota Transplantation in Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials - PubMed
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) poses a significant challenge due to its poorly understood pathogenesis, substantial morbidity, and often inadequate treatment outcomes. The role of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) in managing IBS symptoms remains inconclusive. This systematic review and meta-an …

Our results indicate that SFF is a potent stimulant of macrophages and confers strong anti-inflammatory effects regardless of donor age thereby suggesting its therapeutic efficacy in lieu of FMT therapy.

TGR5 deficiency-induced anxiety and depression-like behaviors: The role of gut microbiota dysbiosis - PubMed
TGR5 deletion in mice induces anxiety and depression-like behaviors, linked to reduced 5-HT levels in serum and the hippocampus. Gut microbiota changes play a direct role in these behaviors and serotonin alterations. This implicates TGR5 and gut bacteria in mood regulation, with potential therapeuti …

FMT from HUC-MSCs-treated mice may alleviate ALI by inhibiting inflammation and reconstructing GM, additionally, we also found that the TLR4/NF-κB and Nrf2/HO-1 pathways may involve in the improvement of FMT on ALI, which offers novel insights for the functions and mechanisms of FMT from HUC-MSCs-tr …

Fecal transplant ‘not over yet’ for C. difficile despite boom in live microbiota therapies
Fecal transplant ‘not over yet’ for C. difficile despite boom in live microbiota therapies
Clostridioides difficile infection presents a unique treatment paradox for clinicians: Antibiotics are often both its cause and its cure. The broad-spectrum antibiotics doled out to treat infections also radically alter the composition of the microbiota, wiping out a significant portion of the bacterial community and upsetting the natural balance of gut flora. Without competition from healthy

CHICAGO — In a Healio video exclusive, Ken Blount, PhD, discusses successful restoration of gut microbiota and clonal engraftment as soon as 1 week after treatment with Rebyota in those with recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection. Blount and colleagues sought to quantify and define clonal engraftment and durable microbiome compositional changes with FDA-approved Rebyota (fecal

Fecal microbe transplants: B. vulgatus genes that correlate with early colonization
Fecal microbe transplants: B. vulgatus genes that correlate with early colonization
Fecal microbe transplants from healthy donors can treat patients with recurrent Clostridium difficile infections. However, after tens of thousands transplants, little was known about which donor strains provide long-term engraftment, and which engraft early after the transplant. Most failures of fecal microbe transplantation occur in the first four weeks. Researchers have now found 19 Bacteroides vulgatus genes that were unique to three strains that show early engraftment in patients after a fecal transplant, as opposed to seven strains that did not show early engraftment.

The alterations reported herein may have been influenced by C. difficile and diarrhoea acquisition site, despite C. perfringens' ability to cause alterations in microbiota due to its virulence factors. Our findings highlight the need for a holistic view of gut microbiota.

FMT future ‘still being written,’ ideally with more options for recurrent C. difficile
From the early days of homemade “poop shakes” blended in a backroom 15 years ago to the current world of FDA-approved live biotherapeutic products, it feels like we are at an inflection point with fecal microbiota transplantation. With credit to Robert Hunter, collaborator and lyricist for the Grateful Dead: “What a long, strange trip it’s been.”
