Initial tests have shown promising results for the new electrolyte design. Single-point energy calculations reveal that potassium ions (K+) in the electrolyte stabilize the (CBu)2NDI structure through electrostatic attraction. When paired with a potassium ferrocyanide catholyte, the flow battery was tested at an electron concentration of 2 M, demonstrating stable performance.
The cost-effectiveness of this new electrolyte is also noteworthy, with materials priced at just $6.18 per amp-hour. Developing NDI-based electrolytes that are both stable and affordable is crucial for the potential commercialization of AORFBs.
The ability to store energy efficiently and affordably is crucial as the world transitions to renewable sources like wind and solar, which are inherently variable.
Despite these advantages, the practical application of NDI derivatives has been problematic.
Aqueous organic redox flow batteries are gaining attention for their potential in large-scale energy storage due to their use of earth-abundant materials and water-based solutions.
