Effect of Aloe Vera Compress for Decreasing the Degree of Phlebitis among Hospitalized Children in Indonesia
Background: Aloe vera is more effective than routine treatment alone to improve symptoms of phlebitis. However, few studies have been conducted in Indonesia to explore the effectiveness of aloe vera on phlebitis among hospitalized children with wide-ranged of age. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of aloe vera in reducing the degree of phlebitis among hospitalized children in Indonesia.Methods: This study was conducted using a quasi-experimental design, a pretest-posttest design with a control group. The sample of this study was 42 children (21 respondents in both groups) with phlebitis that hospitalized in one general public health in West Java, Indonesia from May to July 2019. The intervention group was provided a compress of extract aloe vera (5 ml) and the control group was provided a compress of 70% Alcohol. The instrument used in this study was Visual Infusion Phlebitis (VIP) score. The Mann Whitney test was used to evaluate the difference of degree of phlebitis between intervention and control group and Wilcoxon test used to evaluate the difference before and after the intervention.Results: The majority of respondents were in the infant stage (45.23%), having normal nutrition status (54.76%). On average, the length of stay in the hospital was seven days and receive intravenous therapy solution non-electrolyte and antibiotics. The average score for the post-test score was decreased in both classes. There is a statistically significant difference between the phlebitis score both in the Aloe Vera and 70% baseline-specific experimental classes, during 8, 16, 32, 40, 48 hours of treatment implementation (p

AIM: Diet is a natural source of butyrate through the fermentation of non-digestive fiber, such as acemannan in Aloe vera gel, is a strong appearing target for health and quality of life as an immune modulation and colorectal cancer prevention in aged people. In our earlier research on fermentation by endophytic bacteria in Aloe vera gel, butyric acid was identified by GC/MSD analysis. Present investigation aims the identification of the microbiota. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The endophytic microbiota of Aloe vera gel in the fermented media were examined by use of matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry. RESULTS: The following microbiota were identified: Bacillus cereus, B. licheniformis, Lactobacillus paralimentarium, Yeast: Clavispora lusitaniae. The safety pattern of the prepared Aloe vera gel was tested on normal non-cancerous cells and indicated the absence of any significant possible toxicity on the cells. Also, the extracted gels showed abilities to regulate the inflammatory responses in the inflammation cell models via the reduction in the amount of induced reactive oxygen species and both COX 1 and 2 enzymes. DISCUSSIOIN: Identification of butyrate-producing endophytic microbiota in Aloe vera gel fermentation and finding of inflamatory as well as antioxidant activities of butyrate in the fermented gel may help explain the known beneficial effects of butyrate in intestinal colon and on colitis. An innovative concept of symbiotics: a combination of Aloe vera gel juice and microbiota: Bacillus cereus, B.licheniformis. Lactobacillus paralimentarium and Clavispora lusitaniae, is a perspective on alleviation of cancer disease and improvement of gastrointestinal health by butyrate fermentation.

Background Aloe’s reported bioactivities (anticancer, anti-inflammatory and wound healing) suggest they might inhibit a subgroup of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) called gelatinases (MMP-2 and MMP-9). The goal of the present study was to compare the MMP inhibitory potential of two Aloe species, A. vera and A. arborescens. Methods Different types of extraction were tested and specific bioactive compounds were quantified. Cancer cell invasion inhibitory activities were measured in vitro using the wound healing assay in human colon cancer cells (HT29). Effects on gelatinase activities were further assessed by dye-quenched gelatin and gelatin zymography. Results Different types of extraction yielded significantly different levels of bioactivities and of bioactive compounds, which might be due to a greater amount of extractable bioactive compounds such as anthraquinones. Both A. arborescens and A. vera have potential as inhibitory agents in cancer cell proliferation via MMP-9 and MMP-2 enzymatic activity inhibition, being able to reduce colon cancer cell proliferation and migration but A. arborescens showed to be a more effective inhibitor of cancer cell migration than A. vera. Conclusion This work opens novel perspectives on the mode of action of Aloe species in cancer cell migration and may provide clues as to why there are so many conflicting results on Aloe’s activities.

Glucosamine is commonly used for the treatment of osteoarthritis. It is available as an over the counter preparation and also as a prescription pharmaceutical. There is concern from animal experiments that glucosamine may alter glucose metabolism through the hexosamine biosynthetic pathway. The objective of this systematic review is to determine if exogenous glucosamine adversely affects glucose metabolism in humans. This review does not separate out the effects on glucose metabolism of the various glucosamine preparations.

As glucosamine is presently in wide use due to its purported beneficial effects in patients with osteoarthritis, it seemed important to consider its possible adverse effects on glucose metabolism. Many subjects who take glucosamine for osteoarthritis are obese, insulin resistant, diabetic, or at risk for the development of diabetes, and it is established that glucosamine induces insulin resistance in rats and mice. Hypotheses suggest that glucosamine causes insulin resistance by directly entering the hexosamine biosynthetic pathway. It has been proposed that this provides a model for glucotoxicity-induced defects in insulin action and secretion (1), since, under hyperglycemic conditions, a larger amount of glucose flux is metabolized through the hexosamine pathway. The impact of glucosamine on age-related macular degeneration in patients A nationwide, population-based cohort study
Purpose To analyze the association between glucosamine (GlcN) use and the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) using claims data from the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD). Methods A retrospective, population-based study was conducted with NHIRD data from a 14-year period (2000–2013). Chi-squared and Student’s t-tests were used to evaluate differences between the study and comparison cohorts for categorical and continuous variables, respectively. Risk factors for disease development were examined by the adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) with 95% confidence interval. Kaplan-Meier analysis was performed to compare the cumulative risk of AMD between the two cohorts. Results In total, 1,344 patients with GlcN treatment were enrolled in the study cohort and 5,376 patients without GlcN use were enrolled in the comparison cohort. The incidence rate of AMD was lower with GlcN use (3.65%) than without GlcN use (5.26%) (P = 0.014). GlcN use was associated with a lower risk of developing AMD among patients with hyperlipidemia, coronary artery disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, stroke, other neurological disorders, or degenerative arthritis. Although the incidence of wet type AMD did not significantly differ (P = 0.91), the incidence of dry type AMD was lower in patients with GlcN use (2.9%) than those without GlcN use (4.84%) (P = 0.003). Kaplan-Meier analysis similarly revealed a lower rate of dry type AMD in patients with GlcN use compared to those without GlcN use (log-rank P = 0.004). Conclusions GlcN treatment can decrease the risk of developing dry type AMD. Further prospective controlled studies are needed to determine the effectiveness of GlcN treatment in patients with AMD and the associated mechanism.
