Most people have heard of Leaky Gut, but it is rare to hear anyone talk about the concept of Leaky Brain Syndrome. Today I want to talk about one of the most debilitating diseases linked to a break down in the gastrointestinal barrier, but also potentially a break down in the blood brain barrier.
Dementia. Unfortunately, many are unaware of the connection between gluten and dementia (Alzheimer’s). Part of this connection has to do with the role gluten plays in causing intestinal permeability (Leaky Gut). This process was discovered originally by Dr. Fasano. The part less talked about has to do with gluten’s impact on the microbiome (good bacteria in the gut).

Alcohol Consumption and the Uric Acid Connection - YouTube
We want to do everything we can to keep our uric acid levels in the optimal range, typically below 5.5 mg/dl. And by far and away, the biggest contributor to the elevation of uric acid that we are seeing around the world seems to be the global increase in consumption of fructose sugar. That said, there are other contributors to the formation of uric acid, and one of them is alcohol.
As it turns out, when we look at the metabolism of alcohol and recognize that it directly contributes to the formation of uric acid, we shouldn't be surprised that alcoholic beverages do in fact increase uric acid. To a significant degree it depends on what type of alcohol is consumed, and indeed there are some gender-specific findings as well that are important.
This is important information that leverages the new and exciting research coming out from around the world on the threat posed by elevation of uric acid in terms of our health. Fructose Bad for The Brain - Dr. David Perlmutter Investigates - YouTube
There is an ever-increasing body of evidence that clearly shows the incredible threat posed by dietary fructose in multiple areas of human health. A diet higher in fructose is associated with increased risk for weight gain and type 2 diabetes, and just considering these two processes alone, the stage becomes set for all kinds of other downstream maladies.
We are now seeing robust data that relates fructose consumption to increased risk of brain degeneration and even compromised brain function. In this video, I explore one recent publication that was quite extensive and related fructose consumption in the form of beverages to a rapid increase in brain shrinkage as well as a significant decline in cognitive function. We then explore the mechanisms whereby this occurs including how fructose is metabolized into uric acid, compounding the threat to the brain.

Dr. Bredesen received his undergraduate degree from Caltech and his medical degree from Duke. He served as Resident and Chief Resident in Neurology at UCSF, then was postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Nobel laureate Prof. Stanley Prusiner. He was a faculty member at UCLA from 1989-1994, then was recruited by the Burnham Institute to direct the Program on Aging. In 1998 he became the Founding President and CEO of the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, and Adjunct Professor at UCSF; then in 2013 he returned to UCLA as the Director of the Easton Center for Alzheimer’s Disease Research.
The Bredesen Laboratory studies basic mechanisms underlying the neurodegenerative process, and the translation of this knowledge into effective therapeutics for Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative conditions, leading to the publication of over 220 research papers. He established the ADDN (Alzheimer’s Drug Development Network) with Dr. Varghese John in 2008, leading to the identification of new classes of therapeutics for Alzheimer’s disease. He and his group developed a new approach to the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, and this approach led to the discovery of subtypes of Alzheimer’s disease, followed by the first description of reversal of symptoms in patients with MCI and Alzheimer’s disease, with the ReCODE (reversal of cognitive decline) protocol, published in 2014, 2016, and 2018. Dr. Bredesen is the author of the New York Times bestseller, The End of Alzheimer’s, and the newly released, The End of Alzheimer’s Program. His newest book, The First Survivors of Alzheimer’s, chronicles how this program has virtually rewritten the lives of so many, and reveals, from the patient’s perspective, what this has meant. Epigenomes Free Full-Text The Contribution of Epigenetic Inheritance Processes on Age-Related Cognitive Decline and Alzheimer’s Disease
During the last years, epigenetic processes have emerged as important factors for many neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD). These complex diseases seem to have a heritable component; however, genome-wide association studies failed to identify the genetic loci involved in the etiology. So, how can these changes be transmitted from one generation to the next? Answering this question would allow us to understand how the environment can affect human populations for multiple generations and explain the high prevalence of neurodegenerative diseases, such as AD. This review pays particular attention to the relationship among epigenetics, cognition, and neurodegeneration across generations, deepening the understanding of the relevance of heritability in neurodegenerative diseases. We highlight some recent examples of EI induced by experiences, focusing on their contribution of processes in learning and memory to point out new targets for therapeutic interventions. Here, we first describe the prominent role of epigenetic factors in memory processing. Then, we briefly discuss aspects of EI. Additionally, we summarize evidence of how epigenetic marks inherited by experience and/or environmental stimuli contribute to cognitive status offspring since better knowledge of EI can provide clues in the appearance and development of age-related cognitive decline and AD.

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive and debilitating neurological disorder that affects one million Americans and more than four million people worldwide. It is not known exactly what causes Parkinson’s disease (PD) and it is without a cure. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, PD affects more men than women (by 50%), and is found more often in older people (60 years old on average, although “early onset” can occur before age 50). Total risk is 2 to 5% unless a family member has a known gene for the disease. Knowing exactly how many cases of PD exist is difficult (the estimate is about 50,000 a year in the U.S.) since in the early stages many people think that their symptoms reflect normal aging, so they don’t consult their doctors. Other health conditions may also present symptoms similar to PD (there is no definitive test to find out if someone has the disease). Tremors in the arms or legs are considered the hallmark of Parkinson’s, though the disease inevitably progresses. As motor control diminishes, simple tasks like writing and walking are typically the first to go. Patients eventually become wheelchair-bound and suffer from dementia.
