Click here to subscribe - https://www.glutenfreesociety.org/wxrn Many doctors aren’t screening for gluten sensitivity. And only if “textbook” celiac disease is diagnosed do doctors recommend a gluten-free diet. In some cases, no diet changes are recommended at all. Instead, most IBD patients are given prescription medications that only mask symptoms and provide temporary relief. So in this video, I’ll be discussing how gluten can trigger various inflammatory bowel diseases beyond celiac disease to highlight why a gluten-free diet should be considered more often. It might not solve every case, but I’ve witnessed it solve many. Beware the Selenium Deficiency Trap! How Low Selenium Can Sabotage Your Gluten Free Diet - YouTube
Click here to subscribe - https://www.glutenfreesociety.org/wxrn My Favorite Gluten Free Selenium Supplement - https://www.glutenfreesociety.org/shop/supplements/general-health/ultra-selenium/ Anything that interferes with your body’s ability to digest and absorb selenium will increase your risk of a deficiency. And that’s exactly what gluten does for those with gluten sensitivity. It irritates and inflames the lining of your small intestine, which is responsible for digestion and nutrient absorption. Thus, selenium deficiency is common among those with celiac disease. An untreated case of gluten sensitivity is also a form of physical stress, which may increase your body’s demand for selenium. In this study, concentrations of selenium were significantly lower in patients with celiac disease than those without. Even when following a gluten-free diet. However, it’s also worth noting that a selenium deficiency could contribute to the development of gastrointestinal disorders like celiac disease. Because certain selenium-containing enzymes help protect the lining of the digestive tract from damage and inflammation. This means a selenium deficiency caused by celiac disease can further complicate things. Thyroid disease is also strongly associated with celiac disease. This meta-analysis found that the prevalence of thyroid disease is more than 3 times higher among those with celiac disease than those without. And evidence suggests a selenium deficiency may be involved in some cases. Because it affects thyroid hormone activity and weakens your defenses against thyroid tissue damage. So it’s not surprising that a gluten-free diet has been shown to be an effective adjunctive treatment for those with autoimmune thyroid disease, such as Hashimoto’s. Calories in does not equal calories out! It's much more complicated. - YouTube
Click here to subscribe - https://www.glutenfreesociety.org/wxrn Myth number seven. Calories in equals calories out. Meaning if you eat more calories than what you expend, you will gain weight. If you eat less calories than what you expend, you will lose weight. This is the calorie theory of weight loss. This is a myth. Calories in is not equal calories out. You have to first understand what a calorie is. A calorie comes from kind of a scientific observation that when you put food in an airtight box and burn it and then measure the heat that that burning of that food generates, that heat is measured as a calorie. And so when you see something that is, for example, that contains 10 calories, it's based again on the quantity of heat that it generates when you burn it. Your body is not an airtight box and metabolism is much more complicated than calories in and calories out. Not all calories are created equally. One gram of sugar equals four calories and then four calories from that gram of sugar. Yeah, there's no vitamins, there's no minerals.Your body's going to actually steal from its own vitamin and mineral storehouse to be able to process that calorie. Whereas if you ate a similar calorie that had vitamins and minerals in it, you wouldn't run into the problem of having to steal from yourself. So an empty calorie is definitely not the same thing. And an empty calorie and equals an empty calorie out doesn't hold true to this whole metabolic theory of weight loss. So calories counting calories, although it can work if the calories that you're counting don't come from processed empty calories, there is an importance of knowing calories in calories out for weight loss. If you're doing like a macronutrient program or you're counting your macros and you're just trying to kind of get an idea for how many calories you should eat versus how many calories you're burning in a day, whether you're trying to gain weight or whether you're trying to lose weight because then at least you have some type of, of of objective basis for either increasing them or decreasing them based on how your body is reacting and responding. But a calorie in is not a calorie out. And part of that has to do with the hormonal effect of food and the other part of it has to do with the nutrient density of food. The quality of the food matters and where the food comes from matters, what you're allergic to or not allergic to matters, and whether it's an empty calorie or not matters. If you're just counting calories to try to lose weight, or if you're just counting calories to try to gain weight, or if you're just going through using a point system or something where they're delivering meals to you on a weekly basis, but they're delivering highly inflammatory foods for you, it doesn't matter how much you count, this will be the outcome. And when that's the outcome you lose. To connect with Dr. Osborne visit: On the web: https://drpeterosborne.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DoctorPeterO... Click here to subscribe - https://www.glutenfreesociety.org/wxrn What Can Disrupt Digestion & Gut Function? **Medications can have major effects on your taste, smell, digestion, and motility. Some medications can cause dry mouth, disrupt taste and smell, and can make it harder to digest food. Medications can slow down gut motility creating constipation. Antibiotics can wipe out good bacteria in the gut leading to a disruption in immune function, digestion, and neurotransmitter production. Common medications include, SSRI’s, ant-acids, pain medications, and blood pressure drugs. Have a talk with your prescribing doctor about medications to make sure he/she understands your needs. Gluten Can Cause G.I. Problems Grains, the seeds of grasses, and the glutens founds within those seeds are known to cause gastrointestinal inflammation and hinder digestion. Grains can shut your gut down through specialized proteins that target and inhibit your ability to produce digestive enzymes. Be 100% grain free! Follow the No Grain No Pain diet in chapters 7 and 8 of my book. GMO’s Can Trigger Leaky Gut GMO grains have been genetically manipulated to survive better. Some of them produce their own pesticides! Additionally, they are typically doused with pesticides before being planted, and sprayed again right before being harvested. These pesticides and are known to disrupt biochemistry in the G.I. tract. Food Additives Meat glue, AKA – microbial transglutaminase, is used in processed meats, restaurant meats, processed foods, and dairy products. It has been shown to cause inflammation in the gut. Food gums commonly added to milk substitutes (almond milk, coconut milk, etc) can also create gastrointestinal inflammation. Daily bread -- Can any human body handle gluten Dr. Rodney Ford TEDxTauranga - YouTube
NOTE FROM TED: Please do not look to this talk for medical advice. We've flagged this talk, which was filmed at a TEDx event, because it appears to fall outside TEDx's content guidelines. The speaker makes strong assertions about a specific diet that lack sufficient scientific evidence for general prescription. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/tedx_content_guidelines.pdf This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Gluten – friend or foe? This was the talk that got the standing ovation and changed everyone’s eating habits for the rest of evening. Over the course of 15 minutes Dr. Rodney Ford, MB. BS. MD. FRACP, and a pioneer in the field of paediatric food allergies, convinced an audience of 500 that nobody is equipped to digest gluten. How did he do it? By using lego! Dr. Ford showed us the indigestible gluten protein is chased by the antibodies that our systems create to combat the gluten. Based on decades of research, Dr. Ford believes that abundant health can be achieved by anyone who eats the appropriate foods. Dr Rodney Ford, MB. BS. MD. FRACP, is a paediatrician and former Associate Professor in the Department of Paediatrics at Christchurch Clinical School. He is a specialist in food allergy and gastroenterology at the 'The Children's Clinic and Allergy Centre', Christchurch, New Zealand. Rodney's philosophy is “diet: not drugs” as he has seen too many people given medications for symptoms without first considering the possibility of food allergy or food intolerance. Rodney has been investigating adverse reactions to gluten for over 20 years and these illnesses have now been labelled “Gluten-related disorders” or Gluten Syndrome, with world-wide evidence accumulating that gluten may not be healthy for us all. Dr. Ford's current goal is to bring communities up-to-date about the harmful effects of gluten.
