What Can Disrupt Digestion & Gut Function?
**Medications can have major effects on your taste, smell, digestion, and motility.
Some medications can cause dry mouth, disrupt taste and smell, and can make it harder to digest food.
Medications can slow down gut motility creating constipation.
Antibiotics can wipe out good bacteria in the gut leading to a disruption in immune function, digestion, and neurotransmitter production.
Common medications include, SSRI’s, ant-acids, pain medications, and blood pressure drugs. Have a talk with your prescribing doctor about medications to make sure he/she understands your needs.
Gluten Can Cause G.I. Problems
Grains, the seeds of grasses, and the glutens founds within those seeds are known to cause gastrointestinal inflammation and hinder digestion.
Grains can shut your gut down through specialized proteins that target and inhibit your ability to produce digestive enzymes.
Be 100% grain free! Follow the No Grain No Pain diet in chapters 7 and 8 of my book.
GMO’s Can Trigger Leaky Gut
GMO grains have been genetically manipulated to survive better. Some of them produce their own pesticides! Additionally, they are typically doused with pesticides before being planted, and sprayed again right before being harvested. These pesticides and are known to disrupt biochemistry in the G.I. tract.
Food Additives
Meat glue, AKA – microbial transglutaminase, is used in processed meats, restaurant meats, processed foods, and dairy products. It has been shown to cause inflammation in the gut.
Food gums commonly added to milk substitutes (almond milk, coconut milk, etc) can also create gastrointestinal inflammation.

Daily bread -- Can any human body handle gluten Dr. Rodney Ford TEDxTauranga - YouTube
NOTE FROM TED: Please do not look to this talk for medical advice. We've flagged this talk, which was filmed at a TEDx event, because it appears to fall outside TEDx's content guidelines. The speaker makes strong assertions about a specific diet that lack sufficient scientific evidence for general prescription. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/tedx_content_guidelines.pdf
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences.
Gluten – friend or foe?
This was the talk that got the standing ovation and changed everyone’s eating habits for the rest of evening. Over the course of 15 minutes Dr. Rodney Ford, MB. BS. MD. FRACP, and a pioneer in the field of paediatric food allergies, convinced an audience of 500 that nobody is equipped to digest gluten.
How did he do it? By using lego! Dr. Ford showed us the indigestible gluten protein is chased by the antibodies that our systems create to combat the gluten. Based on decades of research, Dr. Ford believes that abundant health can be achieved by anyone who eats the appropriate foods.
Dr Rodney Ford, MB. BS. MD. FRACP, is a paediatrician and former Associate Professor in the Department of Paediatrics at Christchurch Clinical School. He is a specialist in food allergy and gastroenterology at the 'The Children's Clinic and Allergy Centre', Christchurch, New Zealand. Rodney's philosophy is “diet: not drugs” as he has seen too many people given medications for symptoms without first considering the possibility of food allergy or food intolerance. Rodney has been investigating adverse reactions to gluten for over 20 years and these illnesses have now been labelled “Gluten-related disorders” or Gluten Syndrome, with world-wide evidence accumulating that gluten may not be healthy for us all. Dr. Ford's current goal is to bring communities up-to-date about the harmful effects of gluten.

Can gluten cause gut inflammation? It is well known that gluten causes celiac disease - an inflammatory condition of the small intestine. What is less well known, and often times completely ignored, is the connection between gluten and inflammation of other areas of the GI tract.
Research shows that gluten induced inflammation can affect:
1. The mouth
2. The esophagus
3. The stomach
4. The small intestine (celiac disease)
5. The Large intestines (Ulcerative Colitis & Crohn's)

Does gluten cause cancer? Do those with gluten sensitivity and celiac disease have an increased risk for developing this deadly disease? We will get to that shortly. First let’s dive into some statistics and facts around this deadly disease. Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, with more than 1.5 million new cases diagnosed per year. About 40% of American adults are expected to develop cancer at some point in their life. And the World Health Organization predicts cases worldwide to rise by 70% over the next 30 years. All that being said, it is estimated that 1/2 of all cancers are caused by lifestyle choices such as diet and exercise. To connect with Dr. Osborne visit:

Gluten and Your Vision - YouTube

Before discussing whether or not gluten can cause eye problems, let’s address some important background information. Celiac disease is often thought of as a disease that only affects the small intestine, creating symptoms like diarrhea, intestinal pain, cramping, weight loss, and malabsorption. While that is true, approximately half of all celiac disease patients present with extra-intestinal (non-gastrointestinal) symptoms, such as anemia, osteoporosis, neurological disorders, infertility, skin concerns, and vision or eyesight problems. Ocular (eye) symptoms caused by gluten can vary according to a person’s genetic predisposition, immune status, gender, and age at onset.
This video will focus on how non celiac gluten sensitivity and celiac disease can manifest as ophthalmic concerns, which can be derived from both malnutrition or malabsorption and immune alterations.

As kids are growing and their brains are developing, they may develop behavioral issues. Right now there is a lot of pressure for their parents to then put them on drugs. However, there are a lot of studies that show that if you change the diet, you change the behavior.
It is important to understand that normal brain function depends on nutrients.

Gluten Causes Low Thyroid, Slowed Metabolism, Accelerated Aging, & Slow Healing
Metabolism is the sum of two things. Metabolism equals catabolism plus anabolism. If these are new words for you, catabolism, these are chemical reactions that break things down, break down where anabolic or anabolism is chemical reactions that build.
Remember that your body is in constant breaking down and building mode. So the sum of the quantity of how much you break down old tissue to replace it with new tissue, this is anabolic response and catabolic response. They kind of seesaw back and forth. If you only had reactions that were building you'd get cancer and you die. If you only had reactions that would break you down, your body would do it all the way to nothing. So there's a balance when you have old skin cells, you know, your skin is brand new about every 28 days. So what happens? How do we get rid of old skin cells?
We have catabolic reactions that break those old cells down, and then we have anabolic reactions that help to come in and build new skin cells. And that's why when we have a slower metabolism, we actually slow down the body's ability to heal. And it's not just skin.

Ophthalmologic manifestations related to malnutrition stem from low levels of vitamin A, vitamin D, and calcium, which are common in celiac disease patients. These include retinopathy, cataract, dry eye, and pseudotumor cerebri:
Retinopathy: characterized by yellowish to white lesions studded with tiny holes in the peripheral retina. It is typically caused by a deficiency in vitamin A. The vitamin A deficiency can also lead to night blindness (nyctalopia). Typically, visual function improves after one to four months of vitamin A supplementation.
Cataracts: marked by the clouding of the lens of the eye, most cataracts develop slowly over time and cause blurry vision. Cataracts can be caused by a vitamin D deficiency, as a vitamin D deficiency interferes with the absorption of calcium and the resulting hypocalcemia (low blood levels of calcium) contributes to the development of cataracts. In addition, diarrhea common in undiagnosed celiac patients can lead to dehydration. Dehydration can alter the composition of the lens and lead to low levels of calcium in the aqueous humor. This leads to hypocalcemia which can then lead to cataracts.
Pseudotumor cerebri: also known as idiopathic intracranial hypertension is characterized by increased intracranial pressure of unknown cause. It is thought to be caused by nutritional, metabolic, endocrinological or hematological disorders. In particular, it is linked with both vitamin A poisoning and vitamin A deficiency, although the mechanisms by which vitamin A deficiency and poisoning results in increased intracranial pressure is still not fully understood. Vitamin A deficiency is a common manifestation of gluten induced intestinal damage.
Dry eye: just as it sounds, dry eye results in uncomfortably dry eyes and sometimes small spots present on the whites of the eyes called Bitot’s spots. Vitamin A deficiency is often the root cause behind this condition as well, and research has shown it is more common in celiac disease patients.

Because gluten causes gut damage, digestion and nutrient absorption are commonly hindered in those with gluten sensitivity and celiac disease. Which is why nutrient deficiencies are common. And not getting an adequate supply of certain nutrients can contribute to poor joint health, weak muscles, and pain.
For starters, amino acids are the building blocks of protein. They are used to build muscles as well as collagen, which is the most abundant protein in your body. It’s found in your tendons, ligaments, cartilage, bones, skin, and blood vessels among other places. So if your body isn’t efficiently digesting and absorbing protein, joint and muscle-related problems are possible.
Vitamin C is also necessary to build and repair collagen, and a deficit is common among those with gluten sensitivity. Plus, scurvy is a muscle and joint pain disease caused by a vitamin C deficiency.
A study found that those with muscle pain are often deficient in selenium and zinc. And it’s suggested that selenium and zinc play a role in both reducing inflammation and preventing tissue damage.
Animal studies have found that vitamin B12 may help regenerate nerves as well as prevent pain signaling in the brain. Clinical human trials have also found vitamin B12 to be an effective treatment for lower back pain and neuralgia (nerve-related pain).
Omega-3 fatty acids are known to block inflammation. However, they’re not found in grains or processed foods made with them. So deficiencies are common.
Calcium is a mineral responsible for muscle contractions, while magnesium is a mineral necessary for relaxing your muscles. Thus, magnesium deficiency may cause muscle cramps.
In animal studies, magnesium has been shown to block pain signals. And in humans, it’s been shown to help relieve both acute and chronic pain.
Finally, vitamin D plays a role in bone, muscle, and joint health. Deficiencies have been associated with inflammatory pain. And treatment with vitamin D shows promise for those with muscular pain when deficiencies are present.
