Why Are We In a Rush To Replace Teachers With AI?
Why Are We In a Rush To Replace Teachers With AI?
This post is the fourth in the Beyond ChatGPT series about generative AI’s impact on learning. In the previous posts, I discussed how generative AI has moved beyond text generation and is starting to impact critical skills like reading, note-taking, and impact relationships by automating feedback. In this post, I’ll cover how the technology is marketed to students and educators to tutor students. The goal of this series is to explore AI beyond ChatGPT and consider how this emerging technology is transforming not simply writing, but many of the core skills we associate with learning. Educators must shift our discourse away from ChatGPT’s disruption of assessments and begin to grapple with what generative AI means for teaching and learning.

studentPOLL Report Generative AI May+2023
studentPOLL Report Generative AI May+2023

We found that most high school seniors intending to attend four-year colleges and universities as full-time students this fall are broadly familiar with (and many use) generative

AI tools. Surprisingly, we found that over one- third of students are using generative AI for

schoolwork, but just a fraction are using it for their college search efforts (writing essays, searching for scholarships or calculating chances of getting into certain schools). Additionally, and perhaps most intriguingly, we find that most college-bound students are concerned about the ethical use of generative AI tools, and many expect colleges and universities to educate future students on the proper utilization of these tools.

This post is the second in the Beyond ChatGPT series about generative AI’s impact on learning. In the previous post, I discussed how generative AI has moved beyond text generation into skills like reading. In this post, I’ll cover how the technology is marketed to students in new ways, promising to use a machine to take notes for you, automating lectures and transcription, and even synthesizing the content for a user. The goal of this series is to explore AI beyond ChatGPT and consider how this emerging technology is transforming not simply writing, but many of the skills we associate with learning. Educators must shift our discourse away from ChatGPT’s disruption of assessments and being to grapple with what generative AI means for teaching and learning.
