Whoever and wherever we are today, we are affected by the climate emergency, whether or not we know it. A growing number of us are affected physically and materially, and a multitude of us are now affected psychologically and emotionally – in our private thoughts, in our reactions to the latest news, in our senses of loss, anger and despair.

As a result, we are facing a mental health crisis of unknown proportions. Our work focuses on understanding the ways this crisis impacts our communities and identifying what we can do to mitigate and adapt in order to improve the mental health and wellbeing of all people impacted by climate change.

Depression, schizophrenia and other mental health conditions affect 1 in 4 people in their lifetime, but mechanisms underlying these conditions are poorly understood. New research has linked the body's immune response with schizophrenia, Alzheimer's disease, depression, and bipolar disorder. The study demonstrates mental health conditions might be affected by the whole body as well as changes in the brain. The findings could pave the way for better treatments of some mental health conditions.
