Do you think of the liver as an organ that aids digestion? Many do not, and so you might not think there is a logical connection between liver health and digestive health. Your diet can play a huge role in the healing process. However, all of the blood leaving the stomach and intestines first passes through the liver. The liver filters this blood coming from the digestive tract before passing it to the rest of the body. The liver also detoxifies chemicals and metabolizes drugs and secretes bile that ends up back in the intestines. You can see how liver health and digestive health are interrelated, and so I want to discuss how gluten and celiac disease may influence liver health. This can make both diagnosis and treatment a challenge. However, research has indicated that there is more to this similarity of symptoms than a coincidence. Many studies suggest that IBS patients are affected by undiagnosed food allergy or food intolerance. This relationship has been examined in a wide array of research and has been estimated at anywhere from 5–50% of all IBS cases. In fact, one study found a high prevalence of food allergies in patients with Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD). The mechanism of increased incidence of IBS in patients with food allergies is not fully understood, but increased intestinal permeability (also known as leaky gut) is often suggested. Furthermore, research has noted that patients with undetected celiac disease may present with IBS symptoms. This has led to the recommendation by the American College of Gastroenterology Task force that patients presenting with diarrhea predominant IBS symptoms should be tested for celiac disease. In addition, as we know that the general public in the United States have increased adoption of a gluten-free diet far in excess of the known prevalence of celiac disease, it is believed that many individuals with gastrointestinal symptoms are deriving benefit from a gluten free diet even if they do not have celiac disease. Come on Dr. Osborne. There is no way that all of this can be true! My doctor never talked about any of these things!” Well he should have. Part of the reason this information is not main stream is because most doctors don’t go this deep. Their training on gluten is limited to a small segment about celiac disease. It is not common in medical schools for nutrition or non celiac gluten sensitivity to be discussed in any great detail. It is the scientific researchers and clinicians who help us understand the complexities behind this nutritional topic. And so I went to the research. I didn’t want you to go another day without having this information, because frankly, it could save your life… it could also save the life of someone you love. While much of the research focuses on Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, there is also some compelling research supporting the benefits of a gluten free diet for those with Graves hyperthyroidism. The same study referenced above that looked at the link between celiac disease and thyroid disease also looked at the impact that a gluten free diet has on thyroid function. The researchers found that in certain cases, gluten withdrawal may single-handedly reverse the thyroid dysfunction. One study studied the effect of a gluten free diet on a group of women diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. The study split the group of women into those who followed a gluten free diet and those who ate gluten. The participants who followed a gluten free diet reduced thyroid antibody levels and also increased vitamin D levels. Another study evaluated children aged 1-12 with celiac disease and concluded that compliance with a gluten free diet can help reduce incidence of autoimmune thyroiditis and also maintain a healthy thyroid in existing celiac disease patients. Another topic of interest with respect to thyroid dysfunction is the symptom of obesity in those (particularly women) with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. One study attempted to take the evaluation of a gluten free diet on autoimmune hypothyroid a step further and compared weight loss in a group of women with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis who followed a standard calorie reduction diet with a group of women with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis who followed a standard calorie reduction diet and a gluten free diet. After six months, body fat content was statistically significantly lower in the group of women on the gluten free diet than in the control group of only a calorie reducing diet. Click here to subscribe - https://www.glutenfreesociety.org/wxrn Ultra Pure Protein: https://www.glutenfreesociety.org/shop/supplements/general-health/ultra-pure-protein/ When gluten sensitivity or celiac disease is unmanaged or undiagnosed, deficiencies of macro- and micronutrients can occur. This is generally due to impaired digestion throughout the small and large intestine. Protein is among the nutrients affected by malabsorption in celiac disease. Malabsorption of dietary protein leads to a deficiency of proteins within the body that can cascade into a number of issues in the body as discussed previously. Research studies have identified that those newly diagnosed with celiac disease commonly have protein deficiency. When protein deficiency is combined with chronic inflammation as is common in those with gluten induced damage, a vicious cycle can occur. Especially when gluten contributes to damage of the muscles, joints, and tendons. This cycle, is commonly referred to as the “Gluten Muscle Wasting Cycle” or the “Grainflammation Cycle”. Glyphosate - A Global Health Threat, with Stephanie Seneff The Empowering Neurologist EP. 127 - YouTube
Glyphosate - A Global Health Threat, with Stephanie Seneff The Empowering Neurologist EP. 127 - YouTube
In our ever-increasingly polarized world, there’s one topic of interest in health and wellness that really seems to call out clear differences in opinion. Glyphosate, the herbicide and active ingredient in products like Roundup, has been touted by some as being a wonderful and safe way to rid crops and even homes of pesky weeds. And clearly, those who feel positively about this chemical are being heard as nearly 150,000 tons of glyphosate are sprayed onto American crops every year. That translates to about one pound of glyphosate for every person in our country. And this chemical makes its way into the water we drink, the agricultural products we consume, and even the air we breathe. On the other side of this debate are those who feel that glyphosate represents a significant threat to our health. Researchers, like our guest today, look at the available science and have concluded that, by a multitude of mechanisms, glyphosate may well be responsible or at least contributory for a vast array of human ailments, from autism to dementia to autoimmune disease, and so many more. This debate extends to the confusion surrounding the safety of GMO food. For the most part, the genetic modification of plant seeds is undertaken so that the newly developed plant is not damaged by the weed targeting action of glyphosate. This allows farmers to spray GMO crops with glyphosate, kill the weeds, and still harvest the undamaged plant. But while there may or may not be concern about the specific genetic modification of the plant, this whole scenario sets the stage for glyphosate to appear in our foods and throughout our environment. That said, this is a fundamental nuance to the GMO debate that absolutely must enter the discussion. ==== Stephanie Seneff, PhD is a senior research scientist at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.
