Global prevalence of long COVID and its most common symptoms among healthcare workers: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Global prevalence of long COVID and its most common symptoms among healthcare workers: a systematic review and meta-analysis
This meta-analysis investigates the prevalence and common symptoms of long COVID among healthcare workers (HCWs) globally. It found that 40% of HCWs who had COVID-19 experienced long COVID, with the most common symptoms being fatigue, neurological issues, loss of smell/taste, muscle pain, and shortness of breath. While the prevalence seems similar to the general population, the study notes limitations due to inconsistent definitions and data quality, emphasizing the need for standardized research methods and highlighting the substantial burden of long COVID on the healthcare workforce.

New research links long COVID to worse health-related quality of life | CIDRAP

Researchers analyzed 2022 data from the Behavioural Risk Factor Surveillance System surveys completed by 108,237 COVID-19 survivors who did or didn't have persistent symptoms. Participants' health-related quality of life (HRQL) was assessed via SRGH, self-reported mental and physical health, and efficiency in completing activities of daily life.

Of all participants, 35% were aged 18 to 34 years, 46.5% were men, and 22.7% had long COVID, also known as post-COVID condition (PCC), defined as having lingering symptoms at least 3 months post-infection.

The risk of Long Covid symptoms: a systematic review and meta-analysis of controlled studies
Estimating the risk of long COVID is challenging because many of its symptoms are associated with other conditions. Here, the authors conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies that estimate long COVID risk while accounting for background symptoms using comparator control populations.

Children face elevated health risks for years after covid

Researchers found that those with SARS-CoV-2 infections had a 63% increased risk of developing one or more cardiovascular conditions—including arrhythmias, heart inflammation, chest pain, palpitations, and hypertension—compared to those with negative tests and no documented history of SARS-CoV-2 infection. These risks were elevated regardless of whether the patient had a congenital heart defect (CHD).

Young patients with positive SARS-CoV-2 tests had a 17 percent higher risk of developing chronic kidney disease tested at stage 2 or higher, indicating mild kidney damage that still functioned well, and 35 percent higher risk of chronic kidney disease at stage 3 or higher, meaning there is mild to severe damage impacting kidney function, from one month to two years after infection.

Patients who had a positive SARS-CoV-2 test—compared to those with a negative test—had a 25 percent increased risk of developing at least one gastrointestinal symptom or disorder in the post-acute phase, and a 28 percent increased risk in the “chronic phase” from six months to two years after the SARS-CoV-2 test.

Long COVID facts and findings: a large-scale online survey in 74,075 Chinese participants
Long COVID facts and findings: a large-scale online survey in 74,075 Chinese participants
An analysis of over 68,000 valid responses found that common long COVID symptoms include fatigue, memory decline, reduced exercise ability, and brain fog, with lower rates among individuals infected only once. Women were more prone to long COVID, and symptoms varied by age, except for sleep issues and muscle or joint pain, which were more frequent in older adults. Northern China showed higher prevalence, possibly due to colder temperatures. Risk factors included pre-existing conditions, alcohol use, smoking, and severe acute infection. While reinfection generally caused milder acute symptoms, it increased the likelihood and severity of long COVID. Vaccination, especially with multiple boosters, significantly reduced long-term symptoms. Additionally, COVID-19 patients reported more bacterial, flu, and mycoplasma infections, and 8–10% believed they developed chronic diseases due to the virus.

Is Covid Rewriting the Rules of Aging? Brain Decline Alarms Doctors

Five years after the pandemic’s start, millions of Americans are still struggling with long-lasting symptoms of Covid-19. Cognitive difficulties are among the most troubling and common symptoms in people both old and young. These ailments can be severe enough to leave former professionals like Ken Todd unable to work and even diagnosed with a form of mild cognitive impairment.

Long COVID Showed Me the Bottom of American Health Care
Long COVID Showed Me the Bottom of American Health Care
"The closure of long-COVID clinics in recent years has affected patients who need care. I talked with people who, like me, have been living with long COVID later in the pandemic. Ryan Parker lives in Portland, Oregon; is a member of the Northern Cheyenne tribe; and used to work in philanthropy. Like many people with long COVID, Parker tried to work through his illness. He told me he returned from one work trip so sick that he couldn’t get out of bed for a month. Last fall, the long-COVID clinic that was treating him closed. Because of the disease, Maeve Sherry has been disabled and unable to work for three years. They found a long-COVID clinic in Great Falls, Montana, three hours from where they lived at the time, but it closed in December of 2023, they said. There are now no long-COVID clinics in Montana. When Myisha Hill was still struggling to do household chores, take care of her kids, and even talk weeks after a COVID infection, she looked up the long-COVID clinic near where she lives in Las Vegas, she told me. But it, too, had closed. There are now no long-COVID clinics in Nevada."

Neurocognitive and emotional long-term effects of COVID-19 infections in children and adolescents: results from a clinical survey in Bavaria, Germany - BMC Infectious Diseases
"Analyzing the neuropsychiatric symptoms of PCS in children and adolescents, we found that fatigue, loss of motivation, attention and memory deficits, and affective disorders were the most common, in line with previous findings [11]. The psychopathological examination resulted in 83.5% of patients being rated as abnormal, therefore clearly surmounting the point prevalence of mental illness among children and adolescents (15%) [46] or the COPSY study reporting 30% of children and adolescents in Germany showing psychological abnormalities during the pandemic [47]. More than 50% of our patients had a psychiatric post-COVID diagnosis, with the post-COVID adjustment disorder and post-COVID attention disorder being the most prevalent. Cognitive deficits were mostly evident in the domain of sustained attention."

COVID-19 Brought About a Large Rise in POTS Cases | UToledo News

"From January 2018 to March 1, 2020 — the date researchers used as the cutoff for the pre-COVID era — the study found an estimate of 4.21 new cases diagnosed per month. That rose to 22.66 new cases per month from March 2, 2020, to June 2024, representing a more than five-fold increase. The study also found the incidence rate of POTS was 1.42 per 1 million person-years before COVID and 20.3 cases per 1 million person-years after COVID."

COVID and the Heart: It Spares No One
“Until now, people who suffered mild or asymptomatic COVID-19 were thought to have dodged the brunt of the virus's brutal side effects. But new evidence has revealed that anyone infected with COVID is at higher risk for heart issues-including clots, inflammation, and arrhythmias— a risk that persists even in relatively healthy people long after the illness has passed.”

Revenge of the Miasma
Revenge of the Miasma
Today we uncover an invisible killer hidden, for over a hundred years, by reasonable disbelief. Science journalist extraordinaire Carl Zimmer tells us the story of a centuries-long battle of ideas that came to a head, with tragic consequences, in the very recent past. His latest book, called Airborne, details a largely forgotten history of science that never quite managed to get off the ground. Along the way, Carl helps us understand how we can fail, over and over again, to see a truth right in front of our faces.
